2023 NBA Draft Megathread

I continue to ask... how should we feel about all those perimeter players with very VERY questionable 3p shot? The twins, Walker, Black, etc?

There aren't any/many guard/wing players playing deep in the playoffs that don't shoot or have poor 3p shooting ...

I could see Keyonte George and Kobe Bufkin being the most impactful guards in this draft when it's said and done because they have complete offensive games. They know how to create shots and make shots. Some of these athletic wing players should really be viewed as projects. Keep in mind, players work on their shooting literally all day, every day once they're in the league, so some of them will improve their shooting. Some won't, however. It's a real risk.

Anyone know what’s Bilal’s best position in the NBA?
In the immediate term a long wing that can guard the 1-3 and some 4's. He's a really good cutter and his play in transition is elite. Ultimately I see him developing into someone who can play with the ball in his hands making decision/creating out of the pnr.

His fluidity and pace are what impress me. Very intelligent and has really added to and taken on new responsibilities throughout the playoffs playing on ball and initiating the offense.

You don't worry about it imo. Upside ayers need coaching and time. I wouldn't let a questionable **** deter me unless they had broken form.

Bigger players can normally get by as limited shooters if they can score and draw defensive attention in other ways. For example, guys like Al Horford and Rui Hachimura are threats to drive and create in the paint, so they still need to be guarded. Anthony Davis draws double-teams because he's a great paint scorer, even though he's a limited shooter. Bigs who play from 20 feet in, like Bam Adebayo, don't need to be above average shooters. I would put Jarace Walker in this category. (However, then you can debate whether he's actually big enough to play as a true big.)

But guards who can't shoot had better be pretty special in other ways, or they won't play.

I’ve never really seen Walker as a big long wing, but if that’s the lens you view him through I can understand how he comes off as underwhelming.

He’s a really big guy, maybe not height wise, but his frame and length are definitely that of a big. Most importantly, he’s really good at the big man stuff. I think you get the benefits of small ball without compromising what you would get from a traditional big man. @Handlogten's Heros has mentioned Okongwu as kind of a bad outcome for him if he can’t shoot. I don’t disagree with the comparison but I really like Okongwu myself.

That’s why I mentioned early that we have to make a consideration on what Kessler is right now. Is he at the point where we cannot draft someone who isn’t sure thing fit with him? I would say Jarace is in the “iffy” fit category with Kessler, but is a fantastic fit with Lauri as a 4/5 combo.
Clarification... I don't think its a bad outcome more a median/average outcome that I think most would think is meh. Its just a more limited player than I would want especially since we have Kessler. Maybe Okongwu without the bad injury luck is a different player than he is now. I think its an outcome where you'd just want more.

For what its worth at summer league there were some low level Hawks FO people sitting with me and they were very chatty. I think the organization is still really high on Okongwu. Take that for what it is as the chattiest guy was real "meh" on Griffin and he had a decent rookie year.

I guess... I'm not very excited to draft such a player this high. Again... especially since we already have one that's plenty good enough to play that role... and probably better than Walker. Jarace is iffy fit with Kessler because they have similar functional negatives offensively. How much is he really adding offensively? And I mean again - think about deep playoff run... what are you relying on him to do? Are we drafting him just for defensive versatility?

After watching Bilal ascend and rise to the occasion in these French league playoffs, I am 100% sold that he'll end up being a top 5 talent from this draft class. We need to take him at #9.

Okay but if he had a good few games midseason and reverted back to the mean later? Maybe you’re right, this just feels like hysteria more than anything else. It’s the right time to have a balloon in production/contribution, but those balloons do also just happen almost randomly.

Bufkin's shooting might be the best out of this whole group of guards projected around our spot... He's intriguing... my worry with him is - is he just a sixth man type?

Are you more worried that a player with broken form shoots poorly or player with good form shoots poorly? And I mean that in all apsects, not just 3p. Some of those players have very few attempts from 3 so I'm looking at their FT% too.

For me he’s a PF/ small ball 5 until he proves he can shoot it… even then he might be more of a pure 4. That’s fine but if the shooting doesn’t happen I think it looks a lot like Okongwu and it’s got it’s limits.
I define a big as someone that plays the 4 and 5 by virtue of their bulk and length and principally do their (better) work in the paint.

I guess it depends on what level shooting they need to achieve to be good overall players. If Jarace is a career 33% shooter I don't think it holds him back all that much
