What's new

I hate Lil Wayne with a passion, but...

No Vaseline is pretty good as well.

I think it's pretty clear most of you aren't qualified to be discussing quality hip-hop.

As Honz said, Lil Wayne TRIES. Even if the crazy **** he makes ends up falling flat, it's better than just putting out the same **** with the same beats over and over.

So the NBA should give a trophy out to every player for trying to win a championship. Got it.

NWA's probably my favorite rappers ever. Genuine. Original gangsters. Not all about the benjamins like these prissy bitches nowadays. Just real, hardcore thugs with solid lyrics.

The contraction "Lil" bugs the **** outta me.

Rappers and musicians and reality stars that use nicknames instead of their real names bug the **** outta me. Like "P Diddy" or whatever he calls himself now. Your ****ing name is Sean!! What the fetch is wrong with the name your parents gave you?

/getoffmylawn

So...no musicians you like use a stage name?

Wayne is great as long as your not taking the things he says serious. His music is stupid and fun and its meant to be that, and if you take it as that you will enjoy it. If you are criticizing him because his lyrics don't have depth than you're not the kind of person who should be listening to him. Hes not trying to teach a lesson in his music, hes not trying to be preachy hes singing party songs. Comparing him to "real" rappers is stupid. Guys like Talib, Common, and Mos def are better rappers but they are not doing the same kind of music. Its like saying that all rock is the same and should be judged using the same criteria. Rock is just broken up into smaller genres while all rap is viewed all as rap. Comparing Lil wayne to NWA is like comparing van halen to slipknot.

Exactly, Van Halen sucks.

Because clearly professional sports and the music industry are the same exact thing.

Answer the question then. Is 'trying' just as good as being good?

And nothing in the world is exactly the same as anything else....clearly.

Good rap says something it has a lesson perhaps a positive message to the people and for the people. The mainstream radio crap has no substance, its a catchy beat with recycled lyrics about sex money self boasting type sh**.
As a 40-something year old guy with probably 100 rap/hip hop songs in my library (90 of them are from 1986-1992), I have to wonder "What makes a good rapper"?

I don't know a good rapper from a bad rapper, but I know a song that catches my ear and I am down with O.P.P. and I like to do the Wild Thing, sippin' on gin and juice. Word to your mother.

I have to disagree with you. Record labels are telling these puppet pop rappers what to rap about, most popular music is this pop rap nonsense, when was the last time u heard a rap song on the radio talking about current times or corrupt politicians or speaking their opinion on the world? Mainstream rap is straight puppet clowns. real rap makes you think, who would want the citizens to be dumbed down about world events and occupied with gaining swagg and bling bling more than anyone? Government? We already know they control the news.

There's a lot that goes into making a good rapper. The biggest one that most rappers now days are missing is lyricism. It's gotten so bad that some people thing Lil Wayne is a great lyricist even though he is average at best. Other attributes include "mic presence" (how well the rappers voice sounds over a beat), breath control, rhyme schemes, word play (especially metaphors, alliteration, and double entendres), and flow which combines a lot of things such as where words are emphasized, how the rhymes are emphasized, how the rapper interprets the beat, etc. Beyond that writing skills are also very important.

Some people seem to irrationally hate rap and have very inaccurate beliefs about it. A lot of people think writing rap lyrics is easy (for example someone may make up really weak gangsta rap lyrics). I'll give an example of "extreme lyricism" starting with Eminem.

Since I'm in a position to talk to these kids and they listen
I ain't no politician but I'll kick it with em a minute
Cause, see, they call me a menace and if the shoe fits I'll wear it
But if it don't, then y'all'll swallow the truth, grin and bear it
Now who's the king of these rude, ludicrous, lucrative lyrics
Who could inherit the title, put the youth in hysterics
Using his music to steer it, sharing his views and his merits
But there's a huge interference: they're saying you shouldn't hear it
Maybe it's hatred I spew, maybe it's food for the spirit
Maybe it's beautiful music I made for you to just cherish
But I'm debated, disputed, hated and viewed in America
As a motherfu**in' drug addict, like you didn't experiment, nah nah
That's when you start to stare at who's in the mirror
And see yourself as a kid again, and you get embarrassed

The mainstream has been largely watered down and simplified, but the underground has tons of talented rappers such as Aesop Rock. Aesop Rock is a very abstract writer and has extremely complex lyrics:

It was less an act of hubris
More a lonely hearts club at the helm ofa magic bullet
Away on a relentless bid for rarefied inertia
Rattletrap forks married to the patchy terra firma Ursa Minor getting warmer
I crowbar into the pecking order
The dreck between the whores and Betty Ford-ers

Aesop rock has two songs I like, you can probably guess which ones. Daylight and none shall pass.

I am a much bigger fan of Brother Ali and Jedi Mind Tricks for underground hip hop. Picket fence by Brother Ali has some of the greatest lyrics of all time. Saviorself from Jedi Mind Tricks has one of the best beats of all time.

I have a feeling that we would be great friends. Brother Ali is my favorite rapper and I love Jedi Mind Tricks. I'm not sure how much you actually listen to rap, but the fact that you mentioned those 2 is awesome.

I'm actually surprised so many people on here actually know anything about rap. I have 19,519 songs on my itunes and nearly every single one is rap. Mostly from the 80's 90's or underground. Not that I don't like other genres, because I do. I just personally only listen to rap when I'm on my own.

Man I hate rap, but if the shoe fits, wear it
I've become a freak of nature all the kids stare at
Who walk around bumping RAW with the **** blaring
Saying "**** school" and dropping out like a miscarriage
I'm embarrassed
And I'm ashamed I played a part in this devilish game
Making your common sense perish
But I ain't taking the full blame
Cause most of you chumps running around here ain't never had strict parents
All of your brain cells rotting from weed
You feeling like if you ain't got it, life's not as complete
You having sex with every-mother****in'-body you see
With a past so dark that Satan'd jump out of his seat
But still you out in these streets thinking you hot as can be
Without the knowledge to lead so you just follow the sheep
Making sure your lame swag is all polished and clean
While your favorite rapper's like "Yeah, he got it from me"
You been brainwashed by a fake life that you're used to livin'
When I say the word "fun", what do you envision?
Probably drinking and smoking out with your crew
And chilling with clueless women you trying to bang, bumping New Edition
Is that all you think life really is
Well if so, then you're a ****ing idiot
I honestly feel like grabbing your head and hitting it
Matter of fact, you don't even deserve a brain; GIMME IT!
Do you even have any goals
Aside from bagging these hoes and packing a bowl
Well let me guess- No
You're only in school because your parents make you go
When all you do is play beer pong and hang out with your bros
Yo, society's got you living for a whack cause
You're a ****ing adult with no skills at all
You don't read any books or play ball
You don't draw, you literally do nothing at all
Still you fiend for the glamorous fruits
You don't have cause you idolize rappers that do
And all they say is "I got money and it's stacked to the roof"
And now you think that it's gon' magically just happen to you
How? Your lazy *** don't commit to labor
You pick something up, try it out, and put it down two minutes later
Then you complain about your life cause it ain't getting catered
Now whoever tries to call you on your ********'s a hater
You wanna succeed, you have to try
Or one day you'll get older and regret it all cause you can't provide
Your friends are lowlifes, don't act surprised
Look, just cut the bad fruit off of the tree, make the sacrifice

Girls, stop acting like you want a guy with traits like Romeo
Bitch that's a ****ing lie
You always talk about how every man's fake
And you can't take it and you want something real
Shut up tramp, save it
Twice a week you put on your makeup and damn bracelets
And head to the club half-naked with your *** shaking
Pulling a lowlife ***** who claim he cash making
Til you let him hit and find out he work at the gas station
One of them ****** got you pregnant and you can't raise it
But you caused it, your actions made a fat statement
You want Romeo, then act patient
And stop fronting like he in the club posted in the back waitin'
It's the club, where guys put on a new persona
After they get loaded with a few coronas
They always shouting and wild out with habits that very few condone of
Then they look for beautiful brainless bitches like you to bone 'em
Then when they leave you, you cry and cry
Talking 'bout, "Oh my god I can't find a guy
I've spent so many years and I've tried and tried
Why am I even on Earth? I should die"
You want Romeo, you're not worthy
You're ****-thirsty
You're nasty and probably got herpes
Sometimes the secret to find is to stop searching
Try a new formula, cause your last one's not working

The term "real *****"'s publicly used
And I need to know what it means, cause I'm ****ing confused
Are you one for always busting your tool
With nothing to lose and something to prove to homies up in your crew
Is it because you're selling drugs to get loot
And brag about how you done been shot and stabbed
Like it's fun to be you
But your life's a struggle, right, and you just hustling through
Nah, you hamster *** *****, you just stuck in a loop
Man, why do black people gotta be the only ones who can't evolve
Cause you in the streets acting like a neanderthal
It's clear you can't stand the law, you're lost as an abandoned dog
And all you're interested in is fighting, rapping, and basketball
I can't even **** with you, cause if we out in public
You gon' get caught stealing some **** and get my *** in trouble, too
You'll get old and be nothing
Living life in these streets, thugging and starting **** with anybody mean mugging
Look at you, a real *****, thinking your life's cool
Girls used to turn me down for guys who were like you
'Til you grab their heart and shove a spearhead right through
Then they regret it because it wasn't the right move
Your real ***** talk seems bogus
A real ***** don't brag about being real as long as he knows it
And his future doesn't seem hopeless
A real ***** stays out of jail, handles ****, and he keeps focused

So all you rappers whose soul is out in the wrong
You inspire the issue I wrote about in this song
You go to pile on the young who roam around in the slums
See this is what happens when rap's overcrowded with bum
Hope the hour is long when I'm rolling out with your tongue
The man above is my guide, you know the power is strong
All you menacing freaks are only in it for cheese
And the mass control limit was breached - **** hip-hop
They only in it for cheese, and any eyewitness can see
They purposely making the innocent weak
My existence on this planet's for you, I ain't only here to benefit me
Yo, we need to make a change while there's still time
It is hard, and sometimes I struggle trying to reveal mine
I can guide you if you feel blind
I just need you to be willing to journey into my ill mind

Ill Mind of Hopsin 5 - Hopsin
