What's new

The Official Fire Lindsey Thread

I'm just hearing the news so there's a lot I'm missing. From a basketball perspective this makes sense. Financially, however, isn't $24 million a hefty price to pay for a couple picks? I would rather parlay the salary savings from this year into keeping our nucleus in tact.

Jazz MUST spend up to 90% of the salary cap. Either by signing free agents or paying out to players on roster if the floor isn't reacehed. Jazz reach floor by getting two unprotected picks for essentially signing 2 guys to bloated one year contracts, which would have been the goal anyway without picking up the two firsts.

thats not how salary cap works......

we still have a boatload of money to throw at Hayward and Favors we could give them both max extension or match any contract they sign in FA if we so desire

I'm not talking about salary cap. I'm talking about $24 million. These guys get paid real money.

Someone has refuted the salary floor recently. It doesn't apply in the new CBA, which means our franchise is now out $24 million.

We basically filled up our salary, got draft picks, and a better Marvin Williams.
Since this year coming up doesn't matter, we'll get rid of the ****ty contracts by next year enabling us to still keep flexibility.

So essentially we got draft picks + Rush for nothing.
Think about this though: Those picks are ****ing unprotected.
What if: Steph injures his glass ankles in 2014?
Or if Steph signs somewhere else in 2017? There's a solid chance that GSW are a ****ty team again in 2017.

Exactly. How is this a bad move? Maybe people wanted more. That being said, I think we made out pretty well considering we have all these guys for just a year.

The counter argument is that Iggy to Golden State has put them in contention and that the draft picks are then worthless.
But don't forget that Landry and Jack had to be renounced for this deal to happen and so they lose that bench that put them over the hump last season.

Or imagine that Iggy, Bogut, and or Curry go down with injury for any significant amount of time. If that happens, that really hurts their team. Maybe not as much as far as Bogut is concerned. BTW, not rooting for those guys to get injured. It is just part of the game.

I thought I'd save us time...

Why the hell are we helping out the warriors?
Why are we taking on all these garbage players?
Why are we dealing for late 1st rounders? I thought they sucked? They're worthless? So why are we trading for them? So we can forever have a team of mid/late first round picks?

This was a great deal for us. We got garbage who will ride the pine, help Jazz meet minimum payroll requirements, won't take minutes from youth, and in exchange we get draft picks. To me this is a signal that the Jazz FO is all in on the youth movement and the future. I'm thrilled with this deal, though on the downside, our bench next year will suck big time. But that's ok . . . sing it with me "a tanking we will go, a tanking we will go, draft picks and garbage filler, a tanking we will go."

This is more than a good move. It is a brilliant one and here is why:

1. This ensures that our C5 lead this team next year. There are now 12 players (favors, kanter, burks, burke, Hayward, gobert, mcneal, Evans, beidrins, Williams, Jefferson and rush) on the team. Sign Tinsley and Carroll and that's 14. No room for other vets.

2. Utah is now worse and our own 2014 pick will better. I mean look at the bench...

3. Now Utah has a 2nd 2014 first rounder, a 2017 first rounder and a future 2nd rounder.

4. All 3 contracts are expiring deals that total 24 million. That is 24 million for our future next year.

5. All this sets Utah up for a fantastic 2014 draft.

Lindsey has loaded the bases in two swift moves. If he can hit another homer on 2014 draft day it's a grand slam. He set Utah up for years. Man has been insanely good as a GM so far.

Iggy doesn't make GS contenders.

/counter argument.

Agreed. It also means no Paul back next year. Which IMO was the right move.

We literally JUST had a late first-rounder turn into Trey Burke. If you think late first-round picks are worthless, you haven't been paying attention.

2014's draft and free agents classes are top notch. The Jazz are now in position to make big moves within both. CALM YOUR ****.

Who are you talking to?

I'm a little disappointed we couldn't get more with our cap space. But we have expirings and we have extra picks. Maybe we can parlay those into something. And, as others have mentioned, we are now ALL IN with the youngsters. We just slammed the door shut on signing a bunch of veterans to play ahead of the Core5. Rush will get some time, but Biedrins and Jefferson are garbage. They're going to make this team really bad when they're on the court. AS mentioned, sign Tinsley and Carroll and we're good to go. Definitely see Utah in the mix for a top-6 pick.

Trey Burke goes about 16th in the 2014 draft, apples to oranges.
