Doesn't Utah have a trade exception that is set to expire in a couple of weeks?

Not that I have any expectation of them using it.

So, trade garbage for something valuable, like most suggestions on this forum?

Sure, let's do it.

As funny as that is (rep given), it only makes sense in an age where there's the Gasol trade, the Jefferson trades (both Al and Richard), the Kevin Martin trade, the Camby trades (to and from the Clippers), the Jason Richardson trades (to and from Charlotte), etc, etc, etc. It happens.

I guess the joke's on me, then. I can't argue with that.. there really are some terrible GM's and organizations.

I think K-Mart (Kevin) would excell in our structured offense. He and Deron would be one of the best if not the best 1-2 in the league. Then you mix that with AJ and Mansap and you have serious shot at a championship. Only problem is I don't see any way this happens and it is risky because K-Mart is untested in a structured offense. That said crazy'r things have happened.

Well, the idea here is that Tomic and Hayward aren't garbage, just young. You're right another player would need to be involved in a trade for salaries to match, but the motivation of the other team would be to get young players and shed salary.

The poll is a bit lame, since it totally depends on what deal would be available, but Tomic, a young player and a soon-to-expire salary like Okur and AK are the only assets the Jazz have to work with in a trade scenario.

It happens because teams that aren't going anywhere don't want to pay good players and lose anyway. If they're going to lose, they'd rather lose with a lower out-of-pocket cost.

Players like Kevin Martin, Jason Richardson, and Jeff Malone got traded for this reason. Same with Gasol and Al Jefferson.

Yes but we need to wait for Memo to see how our bench does. Hayward and Evans are basically going to be useless this season

Depending on how the Jazz view the future with Memo, I would almost prefer Crawford to SJax. He's expiring, was a 6th man so is okay coming off the bench, can shot and score. My only concern is that I am loving the Watson Price back court with the second unit. With all that said, the depth in the front court with Memo is highly appealing. I am also concerned about the the distribution of minutes with Memo though.

Yes, Matt Harpring's TPE expires in a few weeks (22 or 23 Dec IIRR). I have no expectation of them using it either, but I compiled a list of players who's salary fits under this level in this thread.

It's looking like a good option is Watson at the 1 and Deron at the 2.

Looks like Sloan's use of him at the two his rookie year might show some dividends this year.

For the record, I have mixed feelings about Martin, Jackson, and just about any scoring wing that might be conceivably available. They don't grow on trees, so if they're available, generally it'll take more than the Jazz are willing or able to give, or they have some sort of significant problem (Martin's would definitely be his D, his durability, and his passing; Jackson's would be age, a bad reputation as being a headcase, and length of deal considering the other things).

I wouldn't feel good about messing up what's going on, but I can tell you right now that what the Jazz have going at the 2 and 3 right now will not hold up in the playoffs. Right now the best options the Jazz have moving forward is playing Deron at the 2 and hoping that CJ figures out how to put the ball in the basket consistently. I hope that will be enough since the Jazz most likely stand pat or make a move to save money.

I agree with this. The Jazz are clearly a top 4 team in the west, maybe top 3 or top 2. They should make the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs this year. But I think this year is actually a good year to try to contend. The Lakers don't really look better this year than last year. Their secondary shooters have killed us in the past, and they aren't doing that anymore. Kobe doesn't look as quick to me, which means he's settling for jumpers and fade-aways more than breaking us down. Plus, I think the Jazz can take any team in the East this year. The Celtics are getting older and stiffer. They have to execute very well and shoot well to be successful, and they have little room for error. The Heat are still figuring things out. Orlando is beatable. Chicago is beatable.

If the Jazz could get on a roll and break out of the WCF, they could win it this year. D. Will could be a legit MVP candidate this year and carry the Jazz, but he needs someone who can play at his speed even if not at his level. Raja and Price are doing okay, but an explosive, reliable player in the backcourt with D.Will would do this team a world of good. I'd say play AK at the SG and give Evans some time at the SF, but AK's not a confident enough shooter.

Guys, Kevin Martin? Stephen Jackson? Really?

From NBA player stats:

Year Team Games
07-08 SAC 61
08-09 SAC 51
09-10 HOU 24
09-10 SAC 22

Over the previous 3 seasons, Martin has played in 65% of possible games. I always thought Jazz fans were kinda sorta down on guys who are always injured.

Second, I always thought Jackson was a head case? Head cases have been proven not to work so well in Jazz uniforms, unless I am mistaken.

And about the Jackson head case thing.... Does anyone seriously think this crapola would fly with the Utah Jazz brass? I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

NBA suspends Bobcats G Stephen Jackson 1 game
By MIKE CRANSTON, AP Sports Writer

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—When the NBA announced before the season it planned to crack down on complaining by players toward officials, Charlotte Bobcats guard Stephen Jackson(notes) played a starring role in a video sent to teams showing behavior that would no longer be tolerated.

Now the volatile Jackson is serving as a costly example of just how serious the NBA is on the matter.

The league suspended Jackson for one game without pay on Tuesday for verbally abusing referee Eli Roe and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection from Saturday’s loss to Milwaukee.

The suspension—to be served Wednesday when Charlotte visits New Orleans— will cost Jackson about $103,000 based on his $8.45 million salary this season. It comes on top of the $50,000 fine Jackson received earlier this month for verbally abusing officials after a loss at Detroit.

Jackson, averaging a team-best 18.1 points, left the practice court Tuesday before reporters were allowed in and before the suspension was announced. He told a group of reporters a day earlier he gets singled out for his direct personality.

“When things are not fair, I speak my mind,” Jackson said. “I’ve never been a guy not to speak my mind and I guess people don’t like that.”

Jackson has been called for six technical fouls this season, not counting one that was later rescinded. That’s tied with Orlando’s Dwight Howard(notes) for the most in the NBA. Players serve suspensions once they reach 16 technical fouls on the season.

Jackson received consecutive technicals by Roe midway through the first quarter against the Bucks as he complained of being held and grabbed. Teammates Gerald Wallace(notes) and Nazr Mohammed(notes) had to usher Jackson off the court.

Referee Steve Javie hit Jackson with a technical foul on Nov. 5 against the Pistons and the league said he then shouted at the officials after the game, leading to his first fine.

“If you all saw what happened, $50,000, that’s a lot of money. But welcome to the life of Stephen Jackson,” he said after the fine was announced Nov. 6.

Jackson, acquired by Charlotte from Golden State before last season, has had trouble controlling his temper throughout his career. He was involved in the infamous Pacers-Pistons brawl in 2004, has clashed with coaches and served a one-game suspension while with the Warriors in 2009 when he reached 16 technical fouls.

The suspension will leave Charlotte short-handed against the Hornets, but Wallace said Tuesday despite a bruised left elbow that knocked him out of Saturday’s game.

Wow, damning. A guy complains to refs. The Jazz have never had a head coach for 23 years that has ever done that.

You have to do better than that, especially for posting the longest response in this thread.

Point taken. I should have made a better argument to begin with, but took the lazy path instead. I'm pointing out a trend, not the fact that he gets technicals. I say the guy is a head case, then immediately see an article that he is suspended for complaining (couldn't have asked for better timing from Jacko).

The disturbing parts about him (in no particular order):

suspended for verbally abusing referee
shouted at the officials after the game
suspended in 2009 after reaching 16 technicals

Look, I know the guy can shoot, defend, etc. etc. I'm just asserting that it would be a recipe for disaster and a potential cancer in the locker room.

At the same time, I also think the Jazz are a piece or two away from being championship caliber. However, Jackson (or Martin) ain't it.

The next person to suggest we trade Memo for Stephen Stinking Jackson will be suspended.
You had better leave the thread in a timely manner too, or there will be fines.

Time to dispel some ********.

Some sources identify Jackson in a more positive manner. Former teammate Tim Duncan once labeled Jackson as the "ultimate teammate" during his days in San Antonio.

Former coaches Rick Carlisle and Don Nelson have constantly referred to Jackson's high character. On the Jim Rome show, Nelson stated Jackson is not simply a good person in the limited world of the NBA, but one of the finest people he has ever known. Former Pacers executive Donnie Walsh, who was principally responsible for the Golden State trade, stated "I love Jack to death. He's emotional and he's going to get technicals. But that's just part of the package. He's a great team guy."
