Looking for genuine discourse re: Donald Sterling/NBA

For the record, I support any protest the players want to make outside of not playing. Jerseys inside out may have looked silly, but it was a way of "doing something" and harmless enough. And I salute Doc Rivers for turning down a meeting with Sterling and indicating he will step down if Sterling remains as owner.

I also support "free speech" but not freedom from consequences. Sterling is certainly free to spout any vitriol he desires, just as you or I or anyone else can express our beliefs and feeelings for any race, religion, political party, etc. But he should also expect to face any fallout from his actions. Were the NBA a "free market," it would likely follow that his business would suffer accordingly, with many employees, customers and vendors opting to deal with another company. But he has a protected franchise, one of only 30 nationwide.

Publicly, Silver needs to fine and suspend Sterling to the maximum level he can under ownership bylaws. Privately, he then needs to make Sterling understand the consequences of continuing to own the Clippers: i.e. loss of sponsorship $, likely cancellation from luxury box holders, etc. Silver can aid in the sale of the franchise (Magic's group is quickly coming together) or Sterling can fight to retain control, lose tens of millions each year and see the franchise lose a ton of value as it spirals out of control and the Clippers struggle to find ANY players that want to sign with them. I think Sterling can be convinced to sell. But an owners vote is not the way to do it.

I wasn't a fan of a protest on Clippers time but that's just my personal opinion. I think that the players should at least look at action in the NBAPA and perhaps the Clippers team send an opene invite to all available NBA players some type of public display of protest. Perhaps a press conference and have all the players wear a shirt with a message on it.

Edit: With the open invite hopefully you get a very mixed group. Hispanic, black, white, American, foreign...

Damn Adam Silver so hott right now. Dat authority doe. :0

Wow.

Silver banned Sterling for life and fined him 2.5 million. I think that is a very strong reaction and sends the clear message that the NBA rejects all forms of hate.

Wonder what this "ban" includes. Just games? practices? Can they ban him from his own property? (offices and arena)

That's what he did. He banned him from all clippers and nba games, from all clippers facilities, and all clippers & nba activities and discussions.

Huh. Wonder how this will play out. Do any of you think that Sterling will file a lawsuit?

I hope so!

I'd be more impressed if Silver instituted a lifetime ban on reporters who ask stupid questions. "Yes, the fact that I'm Jewish played heavily into this decision, thank you for asking"

I wonder how big Silver's ban hammer is? Dude just put it down.

Someone quoted Cuban a few pages back and wasn't sure if that was real or not. His recent tweet says he's on board with the decision.

What a mess, owning major assets isn't clean and tidy in a little bundle like me owning a Computer. For instance does sterling own the practice facilty under a different company and lease it to the clippers?

I'm glad for what Silver did, I hope it makes Sterling go away.

I doubt it

Based on???

Pretty much the entire nation is in solidarity with the players protesting racism. You didn't stop to think what the motive is behind those angry at the players for their protest, calling it a stain on the league?

What the players did helped restore pride to the Association. Why are some upset about this?

How The Worm Turns

Listening to El Rushbo, a caller I'd think was a black male about 40 years old, came on with an allegation that the whole deal here was a setup to capture control of the team, the Clippers. Rushbo "probed" this caller for about twenty minutes on air, intellectually, trying to understand the allegation. The caller said it would be obvious who was behind the plot when the dust clears and the new owner is apparent. He refused to deny it was someone already involved in sports or the NBA, as El Rushbo tried to determine if it was a pure outsider trying to take a stake in the NBA, or someone from the "inside".

At the end of the hour, the news included an announcement that the NBA is preparing to make a statement on the matter. After the news cleared, El Rushbo came on and announced that Yahoo had just posted a news blip that Sterling had an exit strategy from ownership of the Clips: Sell the Clips to Magic Johnson.

My hell, someone with a flagrant involvement with the young woman who recorded Sterling's stupid comments.

Magic Johnson already owns the Dodgers in some kind of connection with the Guggenheims, and is interested in making the Clips the premier LA basketball franchise.

Looks to me like even being a democrat, a liberal, and paying all kinds of payola to the NAACP for being a superrich idiot who likes to flaunt the social and political correctness rules is not enough to hold your place in todays' society. Anybody with a better set of connections is going to exploit whatever can be exploited and force you out of whatever little cash cow you own, if they care to.

That's why I think all the hype about political correctness is adverse to actual personal liberty and personal rights. It's just another whip in the hands of whoever is more uppity-up than you are.

Folks, your "principles" and your outrage mean nothing. You are tools for the elites.

I'd think the above facts would be sufficient for ordinary people with independent opinions to just be outraged enough to boycott the Magic Clips as well.

The evidence speaks for itself: Stoked is a serial racist defender.

It's definitely looking like that more and more.

I wonder if Stoked believes that there are certain scenarios where slavery is a viable option.

It's unfortunate that Sterling has been singled out as racist. If Silver were to ever have all NBA owners take the Harvard Implicit Association Test, I think he'd find himself pretty busy with bannings. #slipperyslope #hypocrisy

All you holier-than-thous on here, let he who is without racism cast the first stone. Leave poor Stokkked alone.

Babe I wondered the same thing when I heard that the lady was associated with Magic. Johnson and it started leaking out Sunday that Magic was prepared to step in and buy the Clippers.

Hundreds of millions of dollars on the line. It is naive to think that refs, players, owners, agents, casinos TV networks, and advertisers aren't willing to play dirty to get a bigger piece of the pie.

Good point

This all may be true but i still wont cry for poor donald.

He will probably sell the team for like 700 million dollars.

I dont think he will struggle to pay the rent anytime soon
