Can Matthews co-exist with Roy?

Stifle Tower

Punch Bowl Re-Filler
Remember the ?'s when Portland extended the offer sheet. And then everyone scratching their heads trying to figure out how Matthews would fit in once Utah decided not to match?

Apparently Brandy Roy doesn't like all the attention that Matthews has been given. He doesn't say that, exactly, but I think it's implied. Little Crybaby Roy is pouting now and telling McMillan to give him the damn ball.

Ah shucks, internal strife couldn't happen to a better team (well, outside of LA, Miami or Denver). And Denver is already falling apart at the seams. Let's just call it the "Fesenko effect." Kyrylo got inside Carmelo's head and Anthony decided he wants out. Now Fesenko comes back and destroys Portland and Roy is complaining. Brandy, c'mon, it's the freakin' pre-season. You know, when starters are supposed to rest and backups get playing time?

If anything, that is going to give Matthews more time. He is complaining about his PG's, not fellow wingmen (at least, thats how I see it.) He wants to have the ball in his hands making plays, as in more PG responsibilities.

And this belongs in general nba. I know it has Matthews in it, but we are talking about another teams gameplan, not jazz related.

Matthews is gone. Portland paid an insane amount. He will be in Portland for the foreseeable future.

It's time to move on.

Just thought it interesting that Roy is complaining NOW. And it coincides with Matthews being the focal point for them in the pre-season.

Yes, I do realize Matthews has left our building. But in my book, he'll always be a Jazz man and I'll always root for him to do well personally. And I think a lot of our players feel that way too if you read about the good-natured trash talking, about Wesley and Deron joking that Gaines is allowed five dribbles during his warmup drill.

I hate that the current CBA allowed Portland to make an offer that pays Wesley 2x what the #1 pick in his draft class makes. But guys like Wesley represent what's RIGHT about the NBA. Guys who just come in, work hard and succeed despite the odds. And the same could be said about Millsap, BTW.

My bad, though. Mods, please move to General NBA.

I heard Locke talking about how Roy and Miller still don't speak to each other, at all. They sent Roy to a psych. to help him work it out, but no dice.

Guy needs to man up and be a leader.

I think Roy has more of a problem with Miller than Matthews. I recall Roy whining about wanting the ball when he was a rookie. My feelings are that Roy wants to be the PG and he won't be happy until he is. I use to like Roy a lot but he seems to be a "me" player.

He'll always be a Jazz man?? Are you kidding me?? He bolted because he wanted more money instead of being loyal to the Jazz who gave him opportunities, playing time, EVERYTHING!

He knew that by signing that RIDICULOUS contract, he would 1) cripple Jazz's financial flexibility; and 2) Take the Jazz out of the running

He SIGNED the contract - don't tell me he didn't READ IT!!

That's not true. He signed that contract expecting the Jazz to match it. But disregarding that, what was his alternative? Didn't his agent say that the Jazz never made Wesley Matthews a firm offer? Instead O'Connor does what he always does: let the market set the price. There's no telling if Matthews would have accepted a lower offer from the Jazz, because supposedly they didn't make one.

If I'm Wesley Matthews, and my agent is telling me that Utah will match the offer, because they've said that keeping me is a priority, they matched the Millsap offer in the previous off-season, and they said they would let the market set the price, I sign the offer. Don't you?

I think matthews may not have shown loayalty, but loyalty should not be expected in the NBA, unless if helps turns profits. Matthews did the smart thing. Also, I don't beieve Matthew's agent had him sign the contract witout at least mentioning the contract to O'Connor. No negotiation, maybe, but I would be surprised if Matthew's agent genuinely expected the Jazz to match.

The Jazz did not offer him anything close to that contract and couldn't afford it even if they wanted to. Matthews gives Portland some good insurance in case Roy or Batum goes down, but he won't help them nearly as much as he did us.

How much time are Matthews and Roy even going to play together? Batum is going to start, and his minutes are likely to increase to almost 30. Even if Fernandez draws a lot of DNP's, I think Wes will be lucky to average 25 minutes, 20 of which will be spent waiting to go in for Batum or Roy in the 1st and 3rd. Even defensively, their best lineup is Batum/Roy to close halves and games.
