Coronavirus

There’s trying containment measures and not getting the virus contained because it’s hard to.

And then there’s this...

How does this help?

The U.S. has been averaging around 700 deaths a day very consistently for the last 3 months. We will be under 300,000 if that holds true so why would you say 400k??
I don't 400K was thrillers number.

And the 400,000 number is a number given by experts. My background is history and political science, not epidemiology. Two million was an early estimate with no mitigation and 350,000-450,000 are the estimates now by the Univ of Washington and other major modeling institutions. I hope for the lowest number possible. However, I defer to credible experts as this is their focus in training.

First of all, I’m not betting on that. Why would you think that would be an appropriate bet? Would you really feel good about that? I understand that online people say things that they normally wouldn’t in person, but that is was a wildly inappropriate thing to say.

Secondly, how accurate should experts be when projecting pandemic statistics? What is your background in epidemiology anyway?

Lastly, I’m not sure what your agenda is here. Diminish confidence in experts? Build Trust in the morons on Facebook? Experts have never claimed to be 100 percent accurate. But they know a hell of a lot more than your average person. Expertise matters!

Your last few posts have been demeaning and offensive. You’ve been unnecessarily combative and trivializing towards the effects of this virus. So be careful with this next post.
You're not betting on that because you don't know how to put your money where your mouth is. It's ok for you to attempt to invoke fear in people, but it's not ok for people to call you out on your fear mongering and bias.

Also you could care less about what experts think if it doesn't support your political agenda. You'll make an argument based mostly on emotions and political bias, claim that "experts" think this way, and then pivot when the statistics prove you wrong, such as in this case.

Yep. That’s it. You caught me.

annnnndddd after that constructive exchange, onto the block list you go.

Oh no I've been blocked by the thriller, whatever will I do? This is such a devastating loss and I don't know how I'll be able to sleep. The thought of not getting notifications that the thriller has responded to my posts with illogical, bias statements sounds horrible. o_O lmao

Well, experts and authorities from USA, Europe and Asia also said, that 737 MAX is a safe airplane before the flights ET302 and JT610.

Why the experts have a "holy cow" status? IMHO today everybody can be an expert if the job title says so specially if you have the right connections. Nobody is blocking me from creating a "Lauriandres Super Research" business entity and claim that i am the expert? Even in my country there are plenty of crystal ball sellers who claim they know the stones they sell have all kind of healing etc properties.
IMHO nothing wrong when somebody predicts something and it is not accurate - problem is, if they continously receive guaranteed tax payers money for that.

Do you understand the difference between being an expert on something and claiming to be an expert?

So are 737MAX engineers and certify organizations experts or not? Remember, 737 MAX got in the beginning the green light from all the experts over the world and it seems, that all non US ones never did any testing and just trusted the results on paper.
IMHO there is not an 100% working method to verify who is an expert or not. There are plenty of experts who claim, that nuclear energy is bad, VW diesel engines are bad (although consume less fuel than some hybrids) etc etc. Well, in the Soviet time the experts told us that Stalin and Lenin are kind of good guys.
According to WHO the Taiwan specialists are no experts at all, because Taiwan is not an WHO member?

Do you understand the difference between "expert" and "omniscient"?

It’s easy to find ‘yes’ men who will do whatever you want.

Seven months later, we still have no plan.

And in this case, likely dangerous. And maybe, at this point, the number one reason why Trump must be defeated. He is not helping himself telling his rallies that we have turned the corner. I believe the incredible lines reflect the fact that our electorate understand the urgency of ridding ourselves of this clown.

Do you understand the difference between "expert" and "omniscient"?
Maybe yes, maybe not :).

So - is that person an expert who claims, that nuclear energy and nuclear power plants are bad? Should i go back to university - because i believe-think, that nuclear energy is pretty decent if you know what you do compared to solar energy.
Is Greta Thunberg an expert?
Should all experts be trusted and treated as a holy cow? Even those who work at reputable companies like Boeing (as an example - not a generic bashing to an American company). Aren't for example you, Thriller and One Brow constantly stating, that it is better to listen experts who are more knowledgeable than somebody other? If even FAA and EASA (both respectable organisations) were not doing their job properly regarding the MAX fiasco, then why should i 101% believe everything that medical experts claim?
Why should i believe 101% a group (WHO) who says that a scientists and experts from a specific country (Taiwan) are not suitable for our organisation?

Expertise is not perfection, but it's also not worthless. Even though we disagree on many things, you'll always find me deferring to @infection on medical matters, because he's the expert there.

I don't expect perfection in life.

According to WHO the Taiwan specialists are no experts at all, because Taiwan is not an WHO member?

That just doesn't sound right. I think you misunderstood something.

Depends. Are you a nuclear engineer?

Is Greta Thunberg an expert?

No, and no serious person has claimed she is.

Absent a reason otherwise, you should always use the best information available, recognizing that people are not perfect.

Why should i believe 101% a group (WHO) who says that a scientists and experts from a specific country (Taiwan) are not suitable for our organisation?

The decision to keep Taiwan out of the WHO is political, not about expertise.

Well, as it is a COVID thread - then the knowledgable ones should also not cause any panic moment a la do not visit your parents (how can a virus free person infect their parents) etc etc. We had tiny debate in Estonia where people asked a document from a doctor, that they are in good shape (because some public sports competition events require it etc) and the answer was something like "we are not qualified". Well, if you recieve quite large per person taxpayer money per year - shouldn't you claim, that you have no expertise?

IMHO there is a tendency specially in social media, that a lot of persons have an attitude "i am an expert, because i was in this or that university so you are automatically dumber than i", which is worrisome to me.

And regarding again the MAX case - according to the reports it seams that experts, engineers and management hide the problems instead of being not aware of them. I.e the design was intentionally like it is/was to save money.

No, although i graduated the Tallinn Technical University (IT Engineer) we did not had many energy related subjects. Still, based on those lessons and with some talking with the tutors, i would not be against to have nuclear plant in Estonia.
If Greta is not an expert, why did she received so much media time and shown as an person who should be a role model based on her knowledge?
How can you take an expert seriously (specially a medical one) if he/she does not recognize similar experts from another country just because some another country might be pissed?

Again, as it as a COVID thread - i agree with Infection and with some Estonian virus specialists (for example Irja Lutsar https://www.etis.ee/CV/Irja_Lutsar/est?tabId=CV_ENG ), that we have to learn to live with virus and in general have a healthier lifestyle. Of course, as life has taught - never say never and be prepared to worst.
Certainly COVID test makers and food deliverers (at least in my country) are making good profit and if WHO tells, that COVID is not dangerous, then the government also says that :).
