Jerry Buss, Laker's Owner, Former Salt Laker, PhD

It really blew me away reading about Jerry Buss today. I hate the Lakers, but you have to admit their owner has some pretty incredible achievements. Not only was he born in Salt Lake City (his greatest accomplishment), but also, he earned a PhD in Physical Chemistry at the age of 24. He went on to become a professor of chemistry at USC, until eventually, becoming a real estate magnate and owner of the LA Lakers.

Anyway, I was interested in seeing if he had any impact papers during his time as an academic, so I "google scholared" him. He was a pretty prolific researcher it turns out with a tier 1 paper that has been cited 292 times (that's pretty good).

Check out the abstract here:

Anyway, just thought I'd give a shout out to a successful Salt Laker!

I'm actually a Ph.D. student in physical chemistry and have read a few of his articles. Some of them are marginally interesting. Mainly, they deal with thermodynamic properties of systems which involve the tabulation of data for tons and tons of different molecules. In short, a lot of his work would be the kind of information you'd see in an appendix in introductory pchem texts.

One thing that has made me curious is to what degree (if at all) Jerry keeps up with current literature. I'd assume he was (and still might be) a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and would have access to at least a few publications. I've convinced myself to ask him that question in the unlikely event he and I ever bump into each other.

That's awesome man! You should buy the Jazz someday so we can win a championship.
