SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – President Donald J. Trump has a contentious relationship with the NBA. But that hasn’t always been the case. The former real estate magnate was a common face at NBA games among fellow celebrities, including a stop in Utah during game five of the Utah Jazz Finals matchup against the Chicago Bulls. The game Trump attended is more famously known as Michael Jordan’s flu game.
In a video posted by Jeremy Brunner, a producer for the Jazz, the future US President took part in the in-game antics, standing under the basket while league mascots performed acrobatic dunks over him.
The Jazz Bear was the third of three mascots to dunk over future President Trump in the video. The exhibition also included Indiana Pacers mascot Boomer, and now-defunct Seattle SuperSonics mascot Squatch. Bear finishes the performance with a front flip dunk over a smiling Trump.
“Pomp and circumstance were plentiful at Game 5, beginning with the opening fireworks and famed ringside voice Michael Buffer’s trademark “Let’s get ready to rumble” announcement,” According to a 1997 article from the Deseret News. “Jazz mascot Bear then welcomed two of his furry friends to town for a few dunks. Boomer, a cat representing the Indiana Pacers, and the Seattle SuperSonics’ bigfoot icon “Squatch” wore Jazz jerseys during the hijinx. The trio’s highlight performance featured trampoline jumps over Donald Trump, yes that Donald Trump, before culminating with a slam dunk by Bear.”
The Jazz dropped the game 90-88 despite building a 13 point first-quarter lead. Trump was courtside for one of the most famous events in league history as Jordan poured in 38 points despite visibly battling the flu throughout the game. The Bulls closed out the series in game six in Chicago.
