This has been a topic of debate, the sexualizing of women's breasts but not men's. What do you think?

Personally I think this is a sexist throwback to Puritans that established the social norms of this country early on that needs to go away. This type of thing has exactly the power we give it. There is nothing inherently sexual about a woman's breasts. It's societal.

And if the argument is religious only even that is problematic. The Bible never differentiates between a man's chest and women's breasts. Mostly it refers to covering up ones nudity and doesn't make a gender specific statement. So it's hypocritical for Christians to say women should cover their breasts but men are just fine going around shirtless whenever they want. Removing stigmas like this would go a long way to leveling things out between the sexes imo. Not that it's that easy but it's another topic that I think is just stupid to criminalize. My daughter walked into my bedroom when I was getting dressed once after a shower, should I be arrested for lewdness? Granted this woman did flaunt it outright, which is the problematic part of this imo. But fundamentally this shouldn't even be a thing, imo.

Thoughts?

So i read some of the tweeter reactions and one of them was very telling. They said, in essence "that's terrible for those kids, now they might think it's normal". I guess that person thinks that if it becomes normal that would just be the worst. Wouldn't it just be a horrible thing if that became, um, not horrible, I guess? Interesting comment.

I am not entirely sure what I think. On the one hand, I hate how women's bodies have been sexualized. Throughout history women are expected to either be covered up to prevent men's evil thoughts or uncovered for men's lustful desires. Women's bodies are not their own.

On the other hand, I would prefer that it swing the other way and men are not allowed to wander around topless.

It's based on cultural perception. In several European and Mediterranean countries, and in South America and the South Pacific as well, women often go topless at the beach or in the park, and it's considered normal. In other words, the woman isn't inherently conveying a message of eroticism by doing so.

In more 'culturally conservative' countries like UK, Canada and the U.S., a woman baring her breasts might immediately be interpreted (by both men and women alike) as an expression of sexual provocation, or even sexual submission, so it's considered more shocking.

Cultures with a strong religious tradition may regard human beings as innately being sinners, and so modesty and covering up human beings' more animalistic aspects is expected as the cultural norm.

I think people need to decide what the norm is and just stick with it. Then just understand that a number of men may need to adjust over time and become acclimated to the new cultural norm.

As a word of caution, however, if a woman bares herself in front of a group of Muslim men, she might be find herself in real danger.

Yeah this. There's an out of shape male cop in my neighborhood who likes to do yard work topless. I wish he'd put a shirt on.

Nothing wrong with anyone being naked. It's no big deal. Who cares if kids see no nudity? It's fine for them. People should dress or not dress how they want. It doesn't hurt anyone else.

It's all completely arbitrary. What's the difference between seeing an ear and a butthole? Maybe we should decide it's sexual to see ears since they are an erogenous spot for many people and it's filthy to see them, lol. What about fingers? People do dirty things with those... I don't want my kids to see fingers that have touched a penis before it might put dirty images in their minds, lol.

I voted for "It depends, but generally no.", simply because people can sexualize any body part, and breasts are not an exception.

You're such an ear.

Harvey Weinstein has a lot to answer for. He's singlehandedly killed off flirting

Yeah **** that guy. Made it uncool to be a fat, ugly, predatory arsehole. (The Soprano's brought it back.) Because of him I've had to start caring about my appearance...
