Simmons, Mitchell, Tatum: What Rookies Have Shown About Themselves in Playoffs

I enjoyed reading this article. Unnamed coaches scouts and gm’s analyze how the careers of Tatum, Simmons, and Mitchell will play out based off these playoffs. I loved this article for two reasons... 1. They seem to love most everything about Mitchell, from his skills on the court to his leadership, and how he carries himself with teammates and off the court. 2. They rip the **** out of Simmons. The part that confuses me is they paint Tatum as some weak defender for some strange reason, which I disagree on.

Here are a couple teasers for those two damn lazy to reads the article

MITCHELL.

All four NBA talent experts had firsthand experience talking to Mitchell during the predraft process and tagged him as far and away the player with the most star qualities. Those included his leadership skills on the floor, in the locker room and in front of microphones and cameras.

SIMMONS.

While Simmons was generally regarded as the Sixers' floor leader, no one surveyed considered him a better leader than Mitchell. One GM wasn't even sure he was the Sixers' floor leader, suggesting coach Brett Brown carried more of that responsibility than should have been necessary, particularly after seeing Simmons wilt when the Celtics forced him to operate out of a half-court offense. He didn't just struggle. He stopped attacking.

They nailed everything I saw from Simmons in the celtics series, they certainly showed how to stop Simmons.

Thoughts?

My thought is Simmons is extremely overrated. All this talk of him being the next Lebron and potentially an all time great is nonsense.

His shot is so broken. He doesnt even shoot with the correct hand. That is going to be a huge problem. Even Rondo can knock down an occasional 3. This guy doesnt even dare shoot it. I cant ever see him averaging much more than 20 ppg. If that. Thats not all time great material.

His passing is nice. It hard to deny. I couldnt care less about the rebounds. He is 6'10" he should average more.

I also think his attitude is broken. That will be a problem too.

Mitchell>Simmons easily. Not just this year but long term too.

Now would be a great time to troll Sixers fans over Simmons. I live in Philly. Everything Jazz trolls were saying about Simmons (broken shot, etc) in the ROY debate, Sixers fans are now saying about Simmons after the Celtics debacle. Many Sixers fans had foolishly written off the Celtics before the series and had them going to the finals.

Philly fans are over-emotional and manic depressive. Utah fans have persecution mentality and inferiority complexes. We all have our flat spots, I guess.

I think Tatum is a bit overrated as well. He's obviously benefited from a good system in which everyone gets to attack in the right scenario to maximize their offensive talent. And sixers D isn't even that good when specialists like JJ and Belinelli step onto the floor.

Tatum is a great young player with a bright future but some people put him as the best rookie in this playoff... I mean, come on now. It's not even close.

Tatum is not overrated at all. If anything, he’s underrated. I felt at the time that he should’ve been the #1 pick

If I were to bet I would bet on Mitchell having the best career of the 3. Mitchell has it all and he has the work ethic to take his game to a whole other level. I think he will reach an All NBA and MVP level. He could win multiple rings and multiple MVP's. Tatum would be second for me. He has the upside of an MVP level player in terms of scoring the basketball. Simmons would be third. If he can't improve his shot he may be at his ceiling right now. 16/8/8 could be exactly what he is at his peak. And his attitude may really hold him back from improving. Dude thinks he's already a legend.

I wish they’d vote after the playoffs. I’ve heard 3 sports writers say they wish they could change their votes after watching both Simmons and Mitchell in the playoffs. But I digress as it doesn’t matter in the long run everyone in the world knows we got the better player, weather they choose to deny it or not.

I see Simmons as great but limited by his shot which will be his repeated over and over again downfall if it doesn't get significantly better. He cannot be a n°1 guy with such a broken shot, it will get exposed by teams giving him the Rondo treatment in the playoffs. He could still have great stats and win titles, but he would have to be the deputy to an Embiid.

Mitchell is the best of the 3 at this stage, but what scares me is his body. He is small, he has a great 3pt shot but also relies massively on a great first step and supreme explosion to get to the rim. This makes him very vulnerable to just that 1 or 2% of athletic decline because of injuries. That's what scares me. I would pick him but i would be scared of that injury that turns him into a less efficient undersized scoring guard

Personnally although he isn't the best at this stage, I must say i feel very very very confortable watching Tatum. he has the fundamentals, the physical tools, doesn't rely on otherwordly athleticism. I could envision him having the longest most fruitful career of the 3, but at this stage he is not an alpha dog.

Of the 3, Mitchell is the only alpha right now. So you pick him hoping you won't regret not picking Tatum imho.

Mitchell is a couple more FTA, 4% better 3 point shooter, and 1-2 assists away from being the difference of a Kobe and an AI/Monte Ellis type. I'm betting on a Kobe. I've never seen a rookie make more difficult shots than this kid. I cringe when he shoots a lot like we all did when AK took a 3, but his somehow go in.

He will learn how to get to the line but his assists probably won't go up much due to system and his size disadvantage. If Utah can build a big 3 his efficiency will skyrocket.

You don’t lump Allen Iverson with Monte Ellis. Give me a break. Iverson is an all time great!!
