What's new

what is the goal?

The point of this season is develop Corbin and evaluate his extension. You know he is such an highly esteemed coach, we can't risk to lose him.

Odd day to complain about lack of development for Kanter and Burks!

yes they both had good games, but it is concerning that Marvin played 22 minutes tonight and contributed nothing before he was finally pulled, while Kanter was ready all night. Not to mention that tonight was a perfect match up for Kanter to start with Favors. Yes, Kanter had an incredible game, but he didn't do it because Corbin developed him: he did it because Kanter himself is incredible. Kanter's 25 pts and 11 boards were achieved in 27 minutes (which sadly is considered a lot when compared to his 20mpg that he's been averaging the last 10 games, even lower if you go back further). Kanter is 21, the kid could play 36 minutes a night and barely break a sweat. Furthermore, it alarms me that our coaching staff has dissuaded Kanter from shooting the 3 (David Locke Tip Off this morning), yet they cite that as the very reason (lack of floor spacing) as to why Kanter and Favors can't play together (latest Dennis Lindsey interview on 1280).

Burks is playing great, and has gotten more minutes than Kanter, and has had a couple starts of late, but let's not act like he is playing as much as he should be in his third year on this gutted roster. He's started because Gordon is injured.

Why is it so hard to understand that corbin doesn't give two ****s about the Jazz future UNTIL he is made a part of that future..right now he is applying for other jobs..it is the FO that is blowing it..IF they would have either just extended Corby or fired him, the tank could be on and running well..Since he is a lame duck coach at the moment he is going to do whatever he thinks will win games. he doesn't care about the pick or developing players. He wont be here anyway it seems...stupid *** Front office has blown this season, not the Coach. Fire or hire, just pick one and do it for Gods sake

I agree

If 27 minutes a night for AB and 25 minutes a night for EK is not enough to develop them they don't belong in the NBA.

This thread is actually brilliant. It sums up the season very well so far. What is the goal? For many fans it is a stepping stone to greater things, it is the almighty Tank, praise all that is crappy and lackluster. But it isn't shaping up very well for the true believers. Instead, we are winning where we shouldn't, and now we are headed squarely into long-term crappy territory, more frightening by far than any Stephen King novel. I am afraid the answer is there is no spoon...I mean goal.

I have a feeling the Jazz will just set the goal at the end of the season, and make the goal be whatever is accomplished. So I don't think it will be much of anything. Probably just 1) get young guys experience, 2) improvement from individual players and with team concepts, and 3) play hard. Gonna be kinda lame.

Obviously every team's goal is to win the NBA Finals every year, but when you know there's no possible way that can happen, it may be nice to focus on an alternative plan. While the Jazz management did a good job preparing a 'high probability of tank' team, Corbin's goal is still to win every game, and the players appear to be buying in to this (not a bad sign tbh, but really sucks when, like I said before, the team has absolutely no shot at winning the NBA Finals, the ultimate goal). Obviously, the big-wigs don't have it within themselves to tell Corbin and the players to take it easy. I'm not sure failing to give Corbin some security (i.e. an extension) before the season started would really have helped tanking much either. While it may decrease his incentive to give his all and win every game, I don't think it would decrease it enough for him to stop doing that. Then, the management would still have to tell Corbin to tank, which this season has proved, is not something they like doing.

Overall, I'm not any less excited about the future of Jazz basketball. Just last year everyone was excited about all the young talent that was on the team and couldn't wait for the vets to move on. Furthermore, we added Trey Burke. Two years ago no gave a **** about Wiggins, Parker, Embiid, et al (maybe PKM, but he's deceased so w/e). I'm not saying that it wouldn't be awesome to have a top 3/5 pick, but I don't think it's the be all end all for future success.

problem is we are winning most of the games on the backs of marvin williams and jefferson.

2 guys who wont be here next year!.

is that the goal.
wasnt that the goal alst eyar winning the backs of big al, millsap and the williams bro.

if this years goal is winnning on the back of the vets. wouldnt keeping millsap and carol. made this a 500+(possible playoff team with horny as coach).
is it development? if it was development we would not play williams at 4. and tru core5 for atleast 10-15mpg together.
is it tanking?does not seem like it
is it defensive improvement? GHA not really big als team has betetr team defense.

so yeah WTF is GOING ON!

Good points, LazyD. I would also say that secondary to winning a championship, a team's goal should ultimately be to win as many games as possible. To do that, it requires constant effort by players who require constant prodding by coaches. Considering that, I think this season had been more successful than even management had hoped, from both playing (subtext: developing) and coaching. If these guys continue to develop like this we will be a good team sooner rather than later. I see a bright future, notwithstanding the 2014 draft.

But the younger guys are learning not only how to play, but also how to win! Thats ultimately what's most important. That's where guys like Marvin and RJ come in handy. I know it's not popular, but it is what it is.

well they have been learning how to win for 3 years now. from the great big al. etc etc etc.

how many eyars do they have to learn to "win"

educate me pleace.

and what have jazz won.

since corbin ecame coach(same time favors came in. and hayward.

jazz have lost more games then won.

got emberassed in the playoffs in 4 games.

corbin is not teaching these guys how to WIN.

so if the goal is to win. again NOT SEEING IT!

Well come on Dutch. Nobody expected the Jazz to win much this year. That was by design. So when they do it's a big deal. When they come close it's semi-news.

and last year?
the year before that.
how many year does it take to learn winning.

Popovich would have had this roster at 4-5 seed for 3 years now.

HOW LONG DOES LEARNING TO WIN TAKE.

NOT SURE IF YOU ARE SERIOUS!

The years between DWill/Booz and now have all been about asset acquisition. Winning games in the process is a bonus. I trust that this current group of young guys will be playoff contenders sooner rather than later.

Props to Marvin and RJ for how well they are actually doing but they ain't doin the heavy duty! In the 13 wins RJ is 5th in PTS and 4th in AST. Marvin is 6th in PTS and 4th in REB. Not one of them has a higher USG% than the core5, Marvin doesn't have a higher REB% than the two big fellows and RJ doesn't have a higher AST% than the other 3 of the core5. The heavy duty was done by the core group. Yes, RJ and Marvin are doing great and they may even exceed our expactations but they are complementary pieces.

I actually hope that Marvin re-signs with the Jazz, because he is a good complementary player. But Jefferson ain't coming back and his playing time is coming at the expense of Kanter and Burks.

Once again the Jazz are heading for the worst position to be in -- miss the playoffs and a 10-14 pick. Hell, the Jazz are on the verge of passing the Lakers in the standings.
