Shocking and weird? news...the lead singer of one of my favorite bands, Against Me! came out last night to RS Mag that he (now she?) no longer is going to be a man and has dealt with gender issues his (her?) whole life. Rolling Stones is claiming that Tom Gabel is the first major artist to do this.

Here is the article:

Against Me! singer Tom Gabel reveals plans to begin living as a woman in the new issue of Rolling Stone. Gabel, who has dealt privately with gender dysphoria for years, will soon begin the process of transition, by taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatments.

Gabel will eventually take the name Laura Jane Grace, and will remain married to her wife Heather. "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news," says Gabel. "But she's been super-amazing and understanding."

Gabel only told a handful of family and friends about her plan to transition before talking to Rolling Stone. Because this is the first time a major rock star has come out as transgender, the singer made a point of speaking openly about it. "I'm going to have embarrassing moments," says Gabel, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."

The full story of Gabel's transformation is in the latest issue, on newsstands this Friday (May 11th). In it, the singer tells Josh Eells about her history of gender dysphoria, the specifics of the transition process and what becoming Laura Jane Grace will mean for the future of Against Me!

Whatever makes him happy. They have always had a feminist vibe in their music so I guess it makes sense a little bit. I love against me! "Reinventing Axl Rose" is perfect, and sink. Florida. Sink. Is a beautiful *** song. Weird story, but to each his own.

You beat me to it JPR. Although Rolling Stone got one thing wrong, Laura wasn't the first major artist. Mina (formerly Keith) Caputo, lead singer of Life Of Agony, came out as transgender over a year ago. I have been following her on Twitter since I heard about her coming out. I actually found out the news about Laura from Mina tweeting about it. Mina Caputo was prominently featured in the Within Temptation song "What Have You Done" prior to coming out as transgender.

I've been reading up on this tom gabel thing and have heard people bring up that Life of Agony singer...I never heard of the bend (which doesn't mean they might not be famous) but I have a feeling Against Me! is a much bigger band (although that's not saying much, I don't think AM! is very big relatively speaking).

I think it's fair to say Tom is the first artist from a some-what popular band to come out. Kind of like comparing John Amechi coming out to having a border-line all-star come out.

Yeah, I thought it was a leftover April Fools Joke at first. Use to be a huge AM! fan, still am to an extent, but their newer stuff just isn't that good.

Also, Mike Kirsch was another musician who went transgender. He isn't nearly popular, but he played in Pinhead Gunpowder with the guys from Green Day in the early 90's and he was in some of my favorite punk bands. She is Sarah Kirsch now.

Be honest homophobes. How many of you dudes would stay with your lover if she cut perkfield right and left and grew a johnson?

Negative. We'd still be friends, etc. but there are some things that can't be overlooked. (a dick, for example)

I'd wish her well and good luck and all that ****, but I'd have the divorce papers ready to roll the next morning.

The fact that you essentially felt the need to defend your own sexuality speaks volumes. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

"a dick for example" made me chuckle.

I also pose a question...if your wife did replace the vajayjay with a deejayjay...would it be weird to have tukhus (yiddish, look it up) sex with her?

Oh, come on. As much as some within mainstream society would like you to believe so, it wouldn't really be a dick.

What if the guy doesn't want a woman anymore and wants a man? Maybe he used his wife to try to convince himself he didn't want to be a woman?

That whole thing is just weird and awkward.

I don't know if I should answer this question, seeing as I'm not exactly a married guy, butt **** it.

No.
