Anyone have a link to Popovich calling out David Locke?

God, I'm getting tired of defending Locke, but this just demands a retort.

BS. I listen to Locke's podcast nearly every day. I find him both very knowledgeable about basketball in general (in fact, far more demonstrably knowledgeable than most talking heads on tv or radio or anyone posting to this board) but also quite knowledgeable and insightful about Jazz stuff.

I'm not Locke homer, he does have flaws, but I find him to be a very good, mostly reliable insightful source of information on the NBA and the Jazz. I enjoy listening to him (I can look past the things he does that annoy me to see the bigger picture) and feel damned lucky that we have someone in this market who cares enough to provide the amount and kind of content he does. I'm guessing it's almost unmatched in the rest of the NBA.

Oh, and I saw the videocast where he drew a dong on his monitor. It wasn't intentional. He was drawing something else out and in the process quite accidentally drew something that looked like a dong. Totally innocent and totally bogus to rag on him for it.

Well, keep listening to Locke. Enjoy it. It's crap, but enjoy it. If he didn't say clearly enough that he didn't know what he was talking about and that the whole purpose for bringing a scout onto his show was to take his ideas for his own show... I MIGHT have enough respect to care. But the guy admitted to perjury, draws wein**rs (freudian slip?), and is obnoxious. There is nothing to like. But keep watching!

Pop is easily a top 5 coach of all time, but I hate the mentality that if you don't play or coach professionally, you can't possibly "know" the game of basketball. This is basically a dig at any fan who wants to talk basketball from an educated perspective. Guys like Zach Lowe, Kevin Pelton, John Hollinger, etc. are great for fans and help fans understand and follow the game better. If you don't want to answer the question, fine. I don't see a need to insult someone personally and insult their goal of better understanding the game.

I don't think that's what Pop was suggesting.

Amen, mellow. Out of rep, but I'll try to remember to catch you later.

Everyone deserves to be treated with respect. I think Locke does provide some decent material, even if it sometimes is slanted to reflect the company line. And let's stop with the "weiner" pic as evidence of his ineptitude. He started off drawing the paint and FT circle and made it too narrow. He was drawing it on his monitor on the fly (pun intended). Even he had a good laugh about it.

Like him or hate him, it was an insightful comment. I think Pops took offense because that change has NOT been working. Remember when Ty went off on the media when he was asked about his rotation? Similar situation. And as mellow said, there were answers that could have been made without personally insulting Locke. How about, "matchups often dictate what we do. Jazz go big at the 4 and 5; we did the same tonight."

Popovich is definitely a top-5 coach of all time. Probably more like top-3. So it's funny when people say he sucks or that Duncan is his sole reason for winning championships. That's like saying Phil Jackson won all his championships only because of MJ. One could make this argument for any coach by saying Coach ______ only won the championship because of (name the best player).

Seriously. Last season Popvich's mostly-aged team beat the pants off a team with LeBron, Bosh & Wade in the best half of basketball I'd ever seen.

He IS a top-5 coach. SA has been incredible at finding and developing talent and Pops is a HUGE part of that. There's a reason so many teams want coaches and GM's who have passed through the SA system, including us with Lindsey and Snyder.

That said, it's just atrocious how he's treating the media and even some of his own players. It's been getting worse. I think it's time for him to retire. And I think the Spurs know that. His successor is sitting on the bench beside him.

People often insult others when they are getting defensive. Clearly POP was getting defensive about Locke asking legitimate questions about the Spurs rotations and strategy. He doesn't think these types of questions should be asked. If he doesn't think these questions should be asked, then he doesn't care about fans that wan to learn more about the game. As a fan, it's insulting to me that POP thinks we don't deserve a few seconds of his time to gain a little insight to what the Spurs are doing.
