Joe Johnson Coming to Utah

lol at all the other teams in the league signing the Timofy Mozgov's of the world for $16 mil/per while DL just sits back in his secret underground lair and scoops up George Hill and Joe Johnson.

Seriously Jazz fans. Look at those 2 additions and how they fill the weaknesses we felt this team had going into the offseason. Now, factor in that their 2 salaries combined for 2016 is $19 mil and compare that with some of the salaries that we saw today.

Damn it feels good to be a gangsta.

Well he is famous for being "Iso Joe". He likes to take really contested midrange jump shots.

Sure I'm aware of who Joe Johnson is. I guess I could see some souring from Burks supporters when JJ takes his minutes late in games.

Josh Howard was out of the league a year and a half.

Raja Bell was known to be nothing more than a spot up shooter who couldn't really create.

Joe Johnson fits neither of those negative categories.

I never said he was the same player, but he's older and I worry he won't play as well, just like what happened with them. I like the signing and am hopeful he keeps up where he left off in Miami though. We'll see how long Joe Johnson plays after he's done in Utah at 37 years old.

Let's not forget, Roger played 30 mins a game for us. I'll be floored if Snyder plays him that much.

Why do you say that?

His shot selection and some of the decisions he makes on the court really annoy me. Also, Given his age, I expect a decline in his physical ability, thus exasperating those issues.

But if it doesn't work out, we will be stuck with him for a maximum of 2 years. And 11m isn't a crippling amount. I don't yet know how I feel about the whole thing.

Wow. If Stifle can't find anything to bitch about I'm not sure anyone will be able to.
Thanks. I made my comments before listening to Locke, but everyone should listen to the podcast (One Love posted a link). Jazz often had stretches where they couldn't score and everyone looked afraid to shoot. And, of course, sacks often tightened up at the end of games. JJ has been there/done that. He can take over when needed. A perfect signing, IMO.

He can score and be a leader off the bench, things the Jazz needed. The biggest benefit in my mind is that he is a veteran who Burks, Hayward and Rodney can learn from.

And it seems clear that Jazz wanted to offer two year deals to maintain flexibility in 2018.

this is a solid move by the Jazz. I like the way the team is shaping up.

He ia also a pretty good spot-up shooter and a good PNR player. He has some negatives, but he also has a lot of positives.

A lot of optimism right now, and that's great. But mark my words, JF will sour on him within a month.

Personally, I think it's an okay deal. A 35 year old chucker with decent shooting %s for 11m. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
But a chucker who had good shooting percentages. Had Burke been able to hit 44/38, we wouldn't have complained about him taking too many shots. Locke pointed out JJ hits 55% off P&R. Gotta love that, even if it drops a bit. He played 30+ mins last season. I think dropping to 25 will keep him fresher.

Johnson can teach Hayward/Hood a lot too. Both Hood/Hayward have a lot of isolation scoring in their game but both can really expand that part of their game into posting up smaller players, something Johnson has excelled at.

So we are looking at a 11 man rotation of:

Hill/Exum
Hood/Burks
Hayward/Johnson/Ingles
Favors/Lyles
Gobert/Withey

I think Ingles/Withey minutes depend on matchups if Jazz go small or big. Obviously if we make it to crunch time in the regular season or playoffs that rotation will probably cutout Ingles/Withey altogether.

Mack/Neto/Pleiss currently make up our reserves (I'm assuming Burke will not be on this roster). So that leaves 1 spot open for either Bolomboy, a trade acquisition, or another FA signing.

Also, the Jazz are still 6 million from the salary floor. If we don't end up signing anyone else besides Bolomboy, the entire Jazz roster will get a nice bonus.

Part of me is worried we are getting a good player just past his prime like with Raja Bell and Josh Howard. Guys I would have loved on the Jazz 3-4 years before they came. Hopefully he still has a little left in the tank. I was never as big of a fan of Johnson as a #1 or #2 option earlier in his career, but he's got a lot of talent. Has enough size to play the 4, and has/(had?) enough athleticism to play SG. Great fit if he comes in with the right attitude to mentor some of these guys. Is a career 37 % 3pt shooter. Could be higher as he probably won't be asked to create his own offense so much. I like the signing, especially with a 2 year deal.

How good of a defender was he last year? Is that something we need to worry about?

The good thing is that we are not getting him to be our starter. He will be our 3d/4th wing. You get Joe Johnson to be your 4th wing, you are in a pretty good spot.

Jazz are close to filling their 15 man roste...The Jazz would really benefit if NBA improved the d-league system today. Make contracts bigger, allow for more up and down between the parent club. all three of their draft picks, Tibor, and perhaps could all be developed.

And yet an hour or two people were bagging on DL because he hadn't done anything even though he had with Hill
