Following Potential 2018 Draftees

What would it take to move up for Mikal Bridges?

For starters he's gonna need to fall past the Kings. If they want him and he's on the board their price will be obscene. Then you've gotta worry bout the Nix.

The price would likely be this years 1st, a future unprotected 1st and another asset, maybe Tony Bradleys enough to cut the mustard. I wouldnt get my hopes up.

but he doesn't fit a position of need and if you are drafting in the second round might as well try to help weak spots not draft a 4th man on the depth chart but I like your thinking

Im expecting Utah to go for "need" in the 1st and a long term project in the 2nd. I've always subscribed to the strategy of drafting/developing backup C's to create trade value, like the Gortat-Dwight Howard situation in Orlando. Its just easier to drum up hype in a limited showcase for these types, plus, Ekpe Udoh is only a temporary band aid. Tony Bradly is a PF/C tweener theres lots of bigs they could draft who' d fit.

Look no further than Moore's play vs Duke this year. Been hyping this kid for years here. Good prospect.

I like the idea, but i dont think the jazz have the assetts to move into the lottery. Unless a team is willing to trade a lottery pick for a one year rental of a veteran, but no-one is crazy enough to do that.

I think the only chance would be with charllote where the jazz give up Alec Burks and take back one of Charlotte's awful contracts and they swap picks.

Last year, would you have thought it crazy to trade pick 24 and Lyles for pick 13?

I think Mikal Bridges is a safe pick. He's practically Trevor Ariza right now--he'll defend multiple positions, be an above-average shooter on the wing and fill the lanes. He'll fit into the rotation of virtually any team.

However, if you compare Mikal Bridges' freshman and sophomore seasons to what guys like Troy Brown, Zhaire Smith and Lonnie Walker did as freshmen (not considering that Bridges was a red-shirt), you might conclude that these other guys have equal or higher ceilings. These younger players have weaknesses, but they have time to address them and might ultimately have a steeper development curve.

So the question is -- where does Mikal Bridges develop from here? Can he add more of an off-the-dribble game? Can he learn to initiate? Can he add strength and score in the post? Can he add a floater? Etc. He certainly can do these things if he'll work hard.

Troy Brown's ability to play on the ball, initiate offense as a secondary handler, along with his above-average rebounding for a player his size and age, make him a more intriguing prospect to me than Bridges. Brown is only 19. What if he gets to 6'8" and about 225 lbs with a 7-foot wingspan, while maintaining his ability to handle and drive the ball? What if he gets his 3-pt shooting up to 36% in a couple years? That's a solid player.

It comes down to teams' appetite for risk and whether they can project a player to put in the work to reach their ceiling.

BTW, I have a problem with Zhaire Smith's inability to handle the ball. That's going to hold him back unless he addresses it right quick. I don't recall seeing many players develop this ability later in their careers. This is one of the things that has held back Andrew Wiggins and one of the main reasons he keeps shooting inefficient shots in the mid-range, rather than maneuvering for a better look.
