Jazz Decades NBA Fantasy Draft

With my last pick I select:
Carmelo Anthony
carmello.anthony.2.jpg

A Guy that can score from anyplace on the floor and fills my need at SF.

That puts my final depth chart like this:

PG Isiah Thomas, Rickey Green
SG George Gervin, Jeff Hornacek
SF Carmello Anthony, Donnell Marshell
PF Dirk Nowitzki, Derrick Favors
C Patrick Ewing, Walt Bellamy

This team would put up massive amounts of points. All of my starters averaged over 24 PPG and I have size at every position other than PG. This would be a run and gun early team with Ewing bringing up the trailer to man the post in a half court set. With Nowitzki, and Anthony as shooters Ewing would have a ton of room to work down low. Both Isiah and the Iceman were great at getting to the rim and finishing. This would be a tough team to beat on any given night because they are going to score, And score alot.

Chad your up for your last pick.

Stoudemire excelled with Steve Nash feeding the ball. Imagine what he would have done with Stockton feeding him.

24/8 per game 09-10,10-11

PG: J.Stockton

SF: C.Drexler, A.Dantley

RAY ALLEN

This pick was a pretty difficult one, and with everyone's rosters just about set, this was going to be an interesting round. I'm happy with this. How could you not be stoked on a guy that did this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5NHAFnJgJ8?

I thought about Russell Westbrook, Blake Griffin (I was certain someone would've grabbed him beforehand), Kevin Martin (career high in PER and win shares by a significant margin, hits 3s and gets to the line like no one else), Danny Granger, Brook Lopez, Marc Gasol, Kevin Love, Manu Ginobili, but Allen has the qualities I'm looking for the most at this point. He's an incredible shooter, he Ds up, he scores without demanding possessions, he doesn't turn the ball over, he works harder than almost anyone off the court, and he's a strong and silent leader. And last year he shot his highest 3P% of his career. Last year he more or less replicated his '07-'08 campaign. He continues to play at a very high level to the point that it's almost unheard of despite his age.

Final Roster and rotation (text in bold reveals positioning where most minutes or role for each respective player will be found):
1 - Walt Frazier/Lebron James
2 - Ray Allen/Darrell Griffith/Reggie Miller/Kyle Korver
3 - Lebron James/Reggie Miller/Kyle Korver
4 - Karl Malone/Al Jefferson/Lebron James/Tim Duncan/Reggie Miller
5 - Tim Duncan/Al Jefferson/Joe Meriweather

Notes:
I built my team to be versatile. I can trot out a number of different lineups and subsequently play a lot of different styles. Miller will probably be the first off the bench as he could send one of positions to the bench and either he or someone else could shift, but he will more than adequately cover either wing position himself. Jefferson would sometimes be first of the bench and usually second off of it. He will more than adequately spell either big position, even though he probably only plays 24 mpg (most of the time). Griffith will still get plenty of minutes, but Korver won't play much. He's there in case I need a crazy shooting lineup (Lebron or Frazier, Allen, Korver, Miller, Malone), foul trouble, or something that prevents someone ahead of him to play. Meriweather is the same. I'd say Korver and Meriweather are my kickers in a hand, basically, but I love them as kickers.

Most of the real strength of my roster comes from having interior presence (including Lebron's), so it's very important that I create the best opportunities that I can with shooting. Lebron doesn't have a reputation as a great shooter, but he can punish you if left wide open and has stayed above 33% from 3 on a respectable amount of attempts for the last three consecutive seasons (that effectively being 50% from 2). However, I would be very well served to have some very potent shooters. Two of the greatest of all-time will either produce a lot of points from 3 and/or HELP produce a lot of points in the paint. Griffith was also a good shooter relative to the age where long-range shooting wasn't valued. And Korver's no slouch either. In addition to that, Malone, Duncan, and even Jefferson are adept mid-range shooters and could create some opportunities for others (cutters, the other big playing low-block) with that.

I also think my team is for the most part very unselfish and will look to help create opportunities for others. Duncan and Malone are going to grab a lot of opposing defensive attention and having BOTH of them be such great passers, both score from mid-range/facilitate from the high post, and both score on the low-block/facilitate from the low-block is going to be very tough to guard as a team. In addition to that, they both have unbelievable fundamentals and set terrific picks and know how to play off of them as well. That's going to create a lot of nice cuts for whoever wants them, and will also help free up shooters (particularly Miller, Allen, and Korver).

My team is also dangerous on the break with Lebron and Karl (two of the greatest transition threats ever as they ran, finished, and passed very well).

I feel Lebron is the ace up my sleeve since I can potentially play him anywhere. I WILL be playing him at SF and PG, though. But he can also thrive as a perimeter 4. His athleticism and strength is going to be a nightmare anywhere, but with him playing as a 1 (and able to guard other 1s) makes it possible for me to play him, Allen, and Miller on the floor at the same time. Or I could play him as a 4 and keep Allen and Miller on the floor at the same time. Since he does everything well and he has such amazing physical qualities, it just gives me a lot of options.

Frazier is going to be my primary ball-handler in half-court settings and will probably be on the floor in crunch time as well. His ability to hurt you with the ball in the mid-range is an insanely valuable thing to have, especially late in games. Considering that the rest of the roster is so polarized between shooting threats and interior powers, that will give him a lot of space to work and if he ends up forcing any help, then there will be a lane to pass or a guy open.

All of my team cares about defense. Not everyone has the tools at this point to be elite, but I believe defense is a mentality and a GROUP effort as much as anything. When starting with Malone and Duncan as your anchors, you're going to have a very strong base. Add in Frazier and Lebron and it's smothering. I don't know that I have the strongest team defensively or the strongest names in that respect, but I feel again that the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts and that my offensive chemistry will go a long way.

You going to start 10's Allen over 90's Miller? Interesting.

You going to start 10's Allen over 90's Miller? Interesting.

Yeahh, Ray Allen has scored more threes but as a whole Reggie not only is one of the most clutch performers in nba history, but he also lead a team that almost collapsed to consecutive conference finals appearances, and one NBA finals appearance againt the Lakers. Ray Allen wouldnt have ever won with the Sonics unless another All-Star joined his team (or 2, in the case of the celtics). Id start Reggie if I were you, but to each his own.

I kind of like the idea of Allen starting. Allen is the better spot up shooter and with that starting 5 that is really all you need, someone to spread the floor. I think 90's Reggie Miller is the better scorer, and off the bench would be like Ginobli for the spurs. A nightmare to defend against for any second unit, and a good defender to boot.

My team wins .. I have no real pitch though .. just thought I'm supposed to thump my chest, right??
