Snyder, Niang and O'Neale must go and I'll explain why

These are things I see that need attention for the Jazz to win a championship:

  • I don't know who dubbed Royce O'Neale a defensive stopper. But if you have eyes and focus on O'Neale when he plays defense you'll see that the opposing player always blows by him. Jimmy Butler scored a season high in points this season and tonight with the Pelicans it is the same. He's a total liability. I don't see the value he adds defensively nor offensively. We can do better at that position.
  • George Niang has to be one of the worst players in the national basketball association. He's completely out of shape, has a belly, misses shots from 2 feet away, turns it over, makes terrible and difficult passes, and has somewhat of a good game every 25 games. I don't know what Snyder sees in him.
  • The Jazz offensive is 4 vs 5. They rarely involve rudy gobert and derrick favors in the offense. there have been thousands of times where clarkson or bogdonovich penetrate to the paint and the jazz center is completely wide open for an easy guaranteed layup or dunk. Instead they throw these crazy passes to the other side of the paint for a 3 point shot. I truly believe Gobert could be averaging 22 points per game if they gave him more opportunities and favors easily 15 points.
  • It's a crime, it's a tragedy that derrick favors plays only 16 minutes per game. The guy is so talented but not only does he not get playing time but he never gets the ball. His points come from his amazing offensive rebounds or tip ins. The man even has a great shot from anywhere, he's really worked on it. He has extremely excellent skills and can catch the ball unlike sadly gobert. Snyder needs to involve him more.
  • What will happen to the Jazz in the playoffs is exactly what happened in the Miami game. the games won't be blowouts in the playoffs but will come down to the wire and the jazz struggle in these moments as they make poor decisions and go away from the passing game to an individual game.
  • And finally the worst thing of all. The jazz are awful at defense, starting with O'Neale. The guards put no effort because they know Gobert is back there and they are getting way too comfortable with that. Watch the guards closely on defense and you'll see what I mean. it's always a blow by and easy two if Gobert isn't able to stop them.
So I'm really appalled at Snyder and the next time the Jazz are in town i'm going to get seats right behind the Jazz bench and hopefully somehow get his attention and explain this to him.

Thank you all and I would love to hear your thoughts.

Royce seems like he has to guard bigger players and he tries hard. I think the minivan is actually improving. The Jazz have two roster spots they can fill. Either buyouts or GLeague superstars need to help out.

dude, do you know how many points Favs will give up in those minutes if your wish is granted? if you've been watching Jazz ball you should know that Favs minutes should go down, not up.

Favors is struggling to defend much at all. I think he really needs the all star break. The whole team is just out of sync and have been for the last 8 or 10 games or do, and it's a testament to how good they really are that we have done so well anyway.

But yes, O'Neale doesn't really have the tools to take on the best wings night in and night out. In a 7-game series he will be exposed. He does well when he meets some of them in the regular season but in the long run if he is our best wing defender we won't go far.

Niang has definitely improved, no doubt. His shooting is more erratic but he tries harder on D. But in the end he is a solid 10th guy. Not a rotation piece at all.

Frankly if we could package O'Neale and Niang and net a solid 3&D wing with length we would improve immediately.

But at it is we have just about the best team D in the league when we are clicking and playing with aggression. We haven't been really aggressive at all in our last 6 games or so, and we still won 4 of them. We need to ratchet up our effort more than anything else really. Challenge, pressure the ball on D, push the ball on O, move the ball to find the open man. That has been the bigger problem lately. Maybe everyone is just tired. They are kind of playing like it.

"if you have eyes and focus on O'Neale when he plays defense you'll see that the opposing player always blows by him."

Finally someone watches everything he does. yes he gets destroyed at times. His homers cant admit his faults.

He is a good player for flow on offense. like premium oil. he helps the ball movement, and shoots a decent 3. He hustles his butt off.
He does make plays on defense, but against certain players, and in the playoffs was awful on defense. Yes, he has has good moments on
defense this year. I've seen those trust me. My only concern is can he get it done in the playoffs.

Royce is good, we all love his personality, and the team certainly does. but is he good enough to win us a title?
I think we need more around him, especially on defense, to make a real run at a chip.

I want him to be the answer, and maybe he will be with additional help, but I worry he's just not big or strong enough to defend in the playoffs against the
best in the league.

Favors often feels like his playing tired of hurt.

Is this a joke? We have the best record in the league and are getting every opposing team’s best effort. I know Royce isn’t what we think of as an old school stopper like Bruce Bowen or Tony Allen, but the NBA rules have changed to favor the offensive player. Some of these guys are unstoppable. Plus we have seen the jazz slow down the hero-ball player like Trae Young; they just have to commit to doing it as a team. I don’t think there’s any player in the league that’s capable of being a stopper one-on-one against Harden, Kawhi, etc. Royce has been good for what he is: the 4th or 5th best player on an excellent starting 5.

Don’t overreact, the Jazz had to go 4-4 to get to the point where they learned from their mistakes and go on a historic win streak.

Every single great team in the last few years not named the warriors had at least a brief string of bad games. We are still #1 in the league record wise and come on Quin is still one of the best coaches in the league. I think he’ll get coach of the year. As Snyder says: cant get too high on wins or too low on losses - when we are #1 in the league I think it’s safe to say that should apply to fans as well - especially for a team that hasn’t gone to the finals since 98. Fans get too high as well. Right now it’s too low.

The Jazz run a system to generate open catch-and-shoot 3pt opportunities, or to generate easy scores for Gobert at the rim. More often than not, teams are packing. the paint against the Jazz and letting them move the ball on the perimeter. Niang fits that system because he can pass and shoot for a guy on a minimum salary. Yeah, Zion was blowing by him and scoring over him, but Zion is a freak. Niang only played 14 minutes last night. Royce made Ingram take and make tough shots from mid-range. That's all he really can do against a guard with that kind of length.

The Pelicans as a team have high-end size and athleticism. Ball, Zion and Ingram are all top-2 lottery picks. The guy who seemed to struggle with the Pels' speed and athleticism last night was Joe Ingles, whose lack of speed has been exposed before in the playoffs.

If the Jazz have a weakness, it's their lack of size and athleticism at the 3/4 between Royce, Joe and Georges. When Mitchell and Conley are on the floor together, our backcourt is small and gives up extra rebounds.

I'm most concerned about the extent to which the Heat and Pels out-rebounded the Jazz. I wouldn't worry about Royce. The Jazz actually need one more guy like him.
