What's new

Scrimmage

I actually think this is the opposite. But regardless, my opinion of Kanter isn't going to change just because we might not be able to throw him in the deep end of the pool right away. I saw glimpses when he got the ball down low. That's when the game slows down for him. When he can just attack. The rest of the time, you can tell he's never seen basketball played at this speed.

I have heard from NBA coaches that it is the case. I personally do not know, and I don't have a link to back it up.
It might be more exact if I say I have heard a/some NBA coaches say it takes longer for NBA bigs to develop, than wings or PG's.
I could be wrong, no really, it happens.

For all the people wondering about Howard...

Corbin said earlier today that Howard had not passed a physical yet (next week, I think Monday or Tuesday) so he would not be allowed to play in the scrimmage.

Yep, he has the same "Oh god I have the ball what do I do?!?" look at times. Hopefully it really is just a product of his lack of PT in the past two years and not a sign that his natural bball IQ just isn't that high.
I guarantee it's the former, but I'm also not saying that he'll necessary be a stud. He's missed some crucial time in his development. Which is why he simply has to get on the court and play because practice cannot replace the game (although it is totally necessary IN ADDITION to playing the game).

I've got no science, either. It's just my general observation that the game is more simplified for bigs than wings as rookies. Last year, as one example, guys like Favors, Monroe, Cousins, Davis, and Patterson all produced. Of the wings, guys like Turner, Hayward, Aminu, George, Henry, and Johnson all had their struggles.

The way he looked tonight, you cannot play him in a real game. He looks more like a guy who should start off in Orem.

Kanter in the Staples Center vs Gasol and Bynum? Coach is going to have to proceed with caution or he'll ruin the young ox.

All I can say is WOW. I must of have watched a different scrimmage than you guys did. I saw a rookie being played by Favors, a guy I think is going to be one of the best defensive bigs in the league this year, and he played hard. Did he force some things, sure. Did he make rookie mistakes, sure. I also saw him battle on defense and play hard. Some say Favors was almost invisable in the scrimmage. Kanter played hard. He will improve.

One more thing for all the guys that are writing Kanter off I would remind you about my bashing Hayward all last year. I even swore I wouldn't spell his name correctly until he scored 20 points a game which I swore he would never do. He stunk the first 3/4 of the year. He was hesitant and jittery on offense and bad on defense. Then one night we were playing Lakers and he got absolutely destroyed in the first half of the game and I took to the board to tell everyone again I told you so and to repeat that Hayward was terrible. He subsequently went off in the second half of the game to have his best game of the year. 20 plus points in the second half. He then went on to play extremely well the last quarter of the year and I got ripped everyday.

What I'm suggesting is that people need to give Kanter 2 years before making some of the terrible predictions. If not you could end up eating your words.

Nice post, oldtimer. It's also a positive for this team to have a nice mix of veteran and young bigs that can go at it in practice everyday.

My favorite play of the night was when Burks had the ball on the break, made an awesome pass to Favors, and Favors sets down a huge dunk. Raja is in much better shape than last year. I thought CJ's new body looked better. I thought Hayward looked really good on his drives and his shot. Kanter is going to take a while to develop. I thought he boarded well, but he was lost in the key on offense. I was really impressed at how well Memo moved on the court. He didn't hit any three's, but if he is moving well, MONEY WILL RAIN!

Memo really was the guy who did the least but the most. He moved well. He could make shots in the NBA when he's 50. So seeing him look fluid was very encouraging.

I was just happy to see him out there moving well. Developing a chemistry with some of these guys he's never really played with will come with time.

I watched a ?replay? of the game. My only complaint was that Favors looked invisible. I've got a lot of hope riding on Favors. I need to see more, heck, something out of him.

The only play I even thought was a good one was Hayward's pass to Evans. That was nice. Oh, I guess Miles had a nice block too. Miles is just so frustrating every year I hate to even mention him.

Well, guess who was guarding Favors? Kanter.
Enes failed a lot when trying to score in the post, but he was very good on defense.
Favors blew by him a time or two early, then Kanter shut down Favors.

Both big men played very well on defense imo. To say Kanter sucked is ignoring half of the court.
He was very aggressive on defense, got some boards in traffic, and played hard on both ends.
All he needed to do was pass out of the post, and not attack every single time. At least he was trying.
Memo Okur was invisable.

The good news is I saw some defense played. Exciting to see in a scrimmage.

Just wanted to throw this out there -

Kanter and Favors both looked awful for the same reason that CJ didn't. Very few plays run on offense, a lot of fluid play with little in the way of half-court basketball. Makes it hard for both Favors and Kanter.

Getting booed in the dance off must have really thrown Kanter off lol. He will be fine, he just had jitters like crazy tonight though.
I was impressed with the way Bell looked. I think he can be a big help to the team if he only plays spot minutes and has a good attitude.

Hope you are right because I am not high on kanter at all, but these posts have me real concerned.

I went to this here is my impressions.

Kanter: looks REALLY slow. I was shocked at just how slow he looked.

Burks: for everything I heard this offseason I was expecting to see a fluid shot and athleticism. What I saw was a shot with no rotation, that was also flat. And a little athleticism but compared to Hayward, CJ, and Evans he is not close in athleticism to these players.

Favors: Still struggled with fouls, got better after getting 3 quick ones. He looks bigger and stronger and had a great finish around Kanter early in this game.

CJ: Played well. Problem is not can he play but if he can play consistently. Impossible to guess after one stong game. Did look like the best player on the floor in this game.

Hayward: Played well. Looked ineffective on defense considering he was guarding CJ quite a bit. CJ blew right past him on more than one occasion. I expected more. Offensively he had one extremely nice pass and played really well on that end of the floor.

Evans: I was impressed. Hit some mid range jumpers and had some spectacular dunks. Guarded Memo a bunch and shut him down with ease. (If Evans does not play over Memo I'll be disappointed)

Memo: Looked terrible. Completely invisible. Missed wide open shots. Looked slow. Tried to post up Evans and failed miserably. As a Memo fan I was extremely disappointed.

Harris/Watson: Both looked okay not great but okay.

Mcleod: Is worse than I remember. I don't expect him to stick.

Other camp fodder: None of them impressed Don't expect them to make the team.

Howard, Millsap and Jefferson did not play? Don't know why.

If I missed anybody then they did not stand out to me.

Forgot Bell. He looked good. Battled Burks on a couple occasions and hit his shots. Ran the offense better than last year.
