Roster Building From Here - FA and Summer of 2023

Don’t generally like to get into others drama but just had to chime in to say HH is one of the least dramatic non **** talkers on the site. Possibly the best and most liked poster on jazzfanz.
I’m good trading takes but to jump straight to name calling ain’t it for me.

Starting to think that probably the most obvious free agent pursuit is the best one after all: Jerami Grant.

He just turned 29 and put up >20 ppg on >.60 TS% which I’m sure is a very short list of players to do so. Dude is obviously a worker based on his trajectory. Has obviously traded defense for offense but I think he can turn that on when needed. Even without the defense, the scoring volume/efficiency, him being in his prime, and his ideal size/positional versatility is very valuable.

Even if the plan was to just eventually flip him, he could yield a haul, especially from a desperate team that still has draft capital.

This is gonna be his last/likely biggest payday so I think the money will be as much a consideration as anything else. The Jazz can provide a max contract which is probably what it takes, and maybe the Blazers balk at that.

It’s just a **** ton for Grant… I like the target but that’s a scary contract and I’m worried that Grant isn’t as good as his rep. I don’t want to be overprotective of our cap space but I likely couldn’t justify giving Grant a max.

I think Portland gets close to a max for him and he stays. Dame made it clear that Grant needs to stay.

I get all of that. Then I remember all the hype that Anunoby generated last year (who is just actually not all that great and usually misses a bunch of time), and it looks clear to me that Grant is a safe way to get two unprotected picks/3+ protected picks, conservatively, at the trade deadline

I think the John Collins thing could be re-visited but it would be something like Collins and #15 for KO and #28. They will make a salary dump deal this summer. We pray John's finger heals and his shot returns.

Yeah... I get that... OG has the "upside" thing with his age though. He also is a better defender. The contract was also a big selling point. Grant at 4/170M might end up being Tobias Harris. Which isn't the end of the world. Just not sure its a huge asset.

If it was either take on one year bad salary for second rounders or sign Grant... I'm likely leaning Grant. Just have to make sure that contract is tradeable.

Lmao y'all are really full of **** if you don't think HH talks **** and gets into it with people he disagrees with
Oh I talk ****... I'm even cool with a little name calling. Just needs to provide interesting points or some decent content. If you just jump to name calling and aren't interesting or provide anything valuable... then I place you on the ignore list.

Its like Demarcus Cousins... if you are good and want to be a dick... cool I will tolerate that. If you suck and are a jerk... well then enjoy the Puerto Rican basketball league.

Maybe I am off here though @NUMBERICA I think my worry is he is empty calories, but he wasn't going to win anything with Detroit and Portland's season went poorly.

I mean... if he'd be happy here on a max or close to it... then it might work pretty well. We'd have length and he might score a bit more in our equal opportunity offense. At very least have the conversation with him and make Portland pay through the nose. Would be nice to be on the other side of that scenario finally.

Just gonna call it now... Portland ends up giving Grant 5 years and 200M+

Grant just isn't a difference maker. You should only max difference makers. I mean they weren't champions but Utah Gobert and Don were difference makers. Mike, tragically, was not.

I’m not sure that is true. Grant is scoring efficiently and still a good defender. Two way wings are pretty valuable. I’d worry a bit more that he wouldn’t be happy here… the money is steep but if Hardy gets more out of him then the contract could be fine… sounds like the cap smoothing will prevent a cap spike but with a rising cap that deal might be just fine.

If you are the Utah freaking Jazz you sign the best players you can and figure it out later. If Grant wanted to take a large contract to come here, you probably just do it.

You said he hasn’t done anything of note. He took a ****** team to the ECF that’s noteworthy and because that goes against your baseless argument that he hasn’t done anything you write it off, par for your course though.
it's the entire what have you done lately thing. noone cares what he almost did a couple seasons ago. he was also the reason they didn't advance past the ECF and why the Hawks are shopping him, in addition to the fact the team was just as effective without him once Murray showed up. I would not discount the idea of him being successful if he was willing to take a lesser role, but as is, they have done everything they could to surround him with high level defenders to cover for him and let him be the key to the offense as the first option conductor. It isn't working anymore for him. He does not get the calls he used to get, still gets a lot mind you, the crafty little F, but the league has grown tired of his antics

Andy Larsens on the radio said when talking about guys they could sign that they’ve tried to trade JC in the past and not found a lot of takers. That doesn’t bode well for his FA and I can see us playing hardball with him… I think if he comes back the contract is likely a bargain… like 15M a year. MLE is 12M so he may find his market is not super frothy and take something 15-17M range.
