2023 NBA Draft Megathread

That's not goalpost moving. That's a fair assessment. I love Haliburton as a player. He's the one All Star-level player that Handlogten mentioned, and I'm hoping Bufkin can be something like him, but the Jazz also need a bonafide #1 option they can build their offense around. They need to take big swings.

You may recall just a year ago, the Jazz had an All Star guard putting up 27/5/5 on the best efficiency of his career, and they got taken out in the first round. If the Jazz, or any other team, wants to go deep in the playoffs, they need one or two unstoppable offensive players.

That's the standard if a team wants to contend.
Besides Giannis, is there a big swing guy that ended up as a number 1 option on a good team?

Can you contribute to winning as you are developing? Can you improve and learn quickly? I think the Thompson twins bust and Black busts. They are not going to contribute to winning as they develop and they are not going to learn quick enough.

Guys like Luka, Jokic, Kawhi... A big swing guy is someone where you say, "If this guy hits, he can be a top 5 - 10 player in the league."

In this draft, outside of Wembanyama, the guys with that kind of upside are Cam Whitmore, maybe Ausar, maybe Bilal. I'd say GG too, but it's sounding like he's got a ways to go mentally.

None of those guys are big swing guys though... Kawhi was a defensive wing that people liked but not seen as brimming with superstar potential... Luka was the third pick... and was the consensus #1 internet draft nerd pick... was 2 time mvp of Euro league... not a big swing at all... Jokic was a fuggin second round pick not some upside guy.

Giannis is the best example of a big swing hitting... for every Giannis there are 100 Poku's or Than Makers.

I wouldn't consider any of those guys big swings

Charlotte isn't passing on Scoot for Haliburton. I question whether a team should pass on Whitmore for Hali too.
They would... Haliburton's floor is an AS pg... his ceiling is an All-NBA pg. This is one of the dumber takes here.

Well "swings" should be measured on who you passed on more than anything, not necessarily the #.
