Exactly this. So it's crazy to me how many people seem to be using the economy as a reason to vote for one candidate or the other. Just goes to show the economic knowledge the "average" voter has, or lacks.

Inflation and interest rate increases are in part consequences of massive government spending to support people through the pandemic but they are also especially in this country to a large part the consequence of market failure and corporate profiteering. You know if the US wants to help the global economy they might look to deliver a balanced budget achieved through a radical idea like a properly progressive tax system. At present American living standards and government services are being propped up by foreign borrowing.

Not quite, unfortunately we tend to borrow money from the US so American interest rates have a direct effect on our economy. Fortunately the US is not a major trading partner of ours so the US economy has very little impact on exports. We are considerably vulnerable to economic downturn in China and to a lesser extent Japan. Also the American policy in the middle east has a flow on effect for our agricultural exports, we sell a fair bit of wheat and meat in the middle east. We are also vulnerable to changes in the price of crude oil because we are completely reliant on oil and petroleum imports as we no longer refine anything here in a spectacular failure of government policy.

Same with milk. I doubt I buy a full gallon of milk per year. This year I bought a lot more because I bought an ice cream maker, so I might be over 1 gallon on the year. Woe is me. I mean the price of the ice cream maker was more than all the milk and cream I've bought, but I choose to worry about Biden's inflation. I really wish Biden had not made the conscious decision to make inflation so high.

Egg prices went way up here in OR. Turns out it's because all egg producers must now be cage free.

When I consider our popular culture, I think the United States is more like a Saturday Night Live Cold Open than “we are a failed nation”. That “doom and gloom” I mention is Donald Trump’s constant refrain. I think a lot more Americans are the audience for SNL, we laugh at Trump’s description of the United States as “failed nation”, I can see a big victory for Harris, but I can see a close win for Trump, as well. Very possible. I’d just expect a big victory for Harris before I’d expect a big victory by Trump. Harris should easily win the popular, though that likely will have more to do with Trump than Harris. I recognize she’s not popular with the majority of men. Not sure what an electoral landslide would be, by the numbers.

Yes, this is precisely why I stated “And that still needs to be addressed”. I don’t consider the concerns that drew people to Trump to be “much ado about nothing”. I do think Trump is simply pulling the wool over his supporters eyes, and he isn’t the answer to their concerns, addressing their sadness at the erosion of “traditional” values. I’ve long believed, I do think history demonstrates this, that when a society is experiencing such strains, stress in the face of social and cultural changes, that’s when a cynical self serving demagogue can take advantage of people who are stressed, saddened by the loss of what they regard as a more ideal America. And that’s what did happen, and is still happening.

I’ve never expressed what I think America needs in any of these threads. And doubt I ever will. It’s way too personal and based in beliefs on who and what I believe human beings are. It all has to do with recognition of our essential nature and purpose. We’d be far healthier if we understood ourselves better.

You are 100% right. I'm making light of it, but this is a real issue and it absolutely has been affecting me along with everyone. Higher food prices are harder on poor people, who spend MUCH more of their total income than more wealthy people.

We are in different situations as inflation in the U.S. has been less than what the world in general has experienced, by a significant amount. Inflation has still been significant. I know the price of eggs, milk, and gas are used because these are very relatable prices that we are likely to be familiar with.

I joke because people act like Biden did something that caused this, apparently for the U.S. and the entire rest of the world. There was going to be inflation following the COVID pandemic, even if Trump had been reelected.

Early voting has started in North Carolina. A bit under 1 million have voted already, which is down 40% compared to this point in 2020. Even more ominous is four years ago Democrats accounted for 44% of early votes and Republicans were only 24% of early voters. This time around they are nearly even with Democrats being 35% and Republicans being 33%, with Independents making up the rest. Worst of all is that 90% of early votes are being done in person, meaning they aren't harvested votes. Republicans usually win the in-person vote.

The only downside is that it means there are a ton of Democrat votes sitting out there for harvesters to harvest on election day, but North Carolina is not friendly to ballot harvesting as they do actually prosecute illegal ballot harvesting there. I think Trump has North Carolina won.
