Because word is that the Spurs have been trying to move the pick and Harper isn't thrilled about going to San Antonio.

That' not word, these are just usual baseless NBA speculations. Why would you trade a player on a cost-controlled contract who can easily turn out to be the future 10-tine All Star and a franchise cornerstone?

Especially for someone who will kill your cap space with a huge contract? They can easily afford to play out this season, see who is a more promising player out of Fox, Castle and Harper and trade the lesser player later. There is absolutely zero reason for the Spurs to move into the must-win-now mode: their window is wide open and they can afford to be patient and deliberate.

Fwiw the jazz traded for a top 3 pick to get D will in a strong draft.

Nope, not the same. The Jazz just traded a collection of slightly lower picks for a higher draft pick. Such trades although rarely, but do happen, like Tatum-Fultz. I was talking about trading a top-3 pick for an older established player to "win now". That is simply a much, much rarer situation.

Well ya because teams with top 3 picks typically suck really bad and are not ready to contend if they trade the pick for a win now player.
Spurs be pretty good with Lauri or Giannis added to the roster.
Charlotte or Washington not be very good with a similar trade.
Teams like Charlotte/Washington are the type of teams usually with the top 3 picks. So of course it's rare.

Man that’s grim.

I am extremely picky about trading draft assets for anybody for at least the next year but would seriously consider spending assets on Trey Murphy. He is a really promising player despite being in what seems like basketball Hell.

Are you sure about that? Dallas got the first pick this year: they could easily trade it for someone like Giannis and contend immediately. Philadelphia got the 3rd pick: if they trade it for someone like Lauri and Embiid is healthy they are certainly a contender. Last year the perennial deep playoff team Atlanta got the 1st. GSW were picking 2nd in 2020, sandwiched between their championship years.

And so on...
