I wouldn't be suprised if the Miller family and Jazz FO now think that bringing Matthews back is worth going deeper into tax territory.

What makes you think that?

Obviously since Miller approved going over the luxury tax last season to keep Maynor and Brewer. I think the Millers thought we had a "contender" last season with Boozer putting up great numbers, AK playing effectively and us moving up the playoff ladder. Then Greg made KOC do the Harpring/Maynor dump despite Maynor being a great quality backup to Deron, even teaming with him in the backcourt at times. Then the team was playing great and he dumped Brewer. Of course, AK then went down, then Okur...end of story.

Point is, Miller has shown he'll dump smaller parts to save money. If Brewer was run out of town because his agent wouldn't sign a reasonable extension prior to last season, I don't see him paying 2x that much for Wesley. I really, really like Wesley. But I don't think he's worth nearly $7M/per..

Andre Iguodala anyone? I really think o'Conner and his ties to th 76ers might be able to pull this one off...it will hurt losing the financial flexability next year, but Kirilenko for iggy and change (Smith) is the move i would be pushing for. It's obvious the Jazz wanted to upgrade the 2 (Foye and Childress) without losing Kirilenko, but for Iggy I would do it in a heartbeat, he is always healthy, plays great d and can create his own shot, plus he is younger at 26 run him with Jefferson and Dwill for the next 3 years to see what we've got -

Iggy is not on the block though, he is cheaper than AK, puts up better numbers, and plays 82 games a year. We will probably giving a #1 to Minnesota so can't entice them with picks either. We cant get Iggy.

We will be over the tax if we acquire Jefferson. I highly doubt we sign anyone for much more than the minimum unless we are able to dump AK's contract.

I just wrote a piece on this. Worst case, the Jazz may have sacrificed 8 assets in order to sign Big Al (1-2 draft picks, 1 TPE traded, up to 3 TPEs that they might now let expire, plus the MLE and the BAE that they might not use).

I like some of what Big Al brings to the table, but the opportunity cost might be a killer.

Kenwood, first of all, it's highly doubtful the Jazz gave up everything for Al. Second of all, the reason why the Jazz are in a situation where their hands are tied comes down to AK. Dude has a max contract but is putting up numbers that justify a contract about half of what he has. Because of AK they don't have any flexiblity, even if the Jazz gave up all those assets, they would be hard pressed to use any of them without moving AK because of LT concerns.

Good article Kenwood. I agree on several points. I truly believe Al's stats will increase in a Jazz uniform. It excites me to see him paired with Deron.

What opportunity cost? As if the Jazz were going to use these TPEs. Look, it's extremely rare to get an opportunity to get a center capable of 20-10 numbers with a couple of blocks to boot. What do you think all this opportunity cost really is? A couple of average players? Instead we got a guy, who can be a star. And the only reason he was available for a draft choice is because he had an injury a year ago and last season was not as great. But that's the thing though: buy low. Yes, there is a risk involved here - because of injury. But Jefferson is 25 years old and already played all year on it. His best years are likely ahead of him. I would have liked to keep Booz, but between the two, I want to give Al a shot. Al is big and athletic enough to play C. That means we can start him and Millsap together, thus giving Paul an opportunity to replace Boozer, with Al replacing Okur. We have 2 20-10 guys potentially in a starting line-up for DWill to give the ball to. This is something we could not have with Boozer here. So, no I am not going to sit here and say that we could have used lesser TPEs for some OK players. We got the best guy we could, and that's all we can ask for.

i got on facebook just barely to post about the al jefferson trade.. then i saw CJ's status as "gone...."
idk if its because he is traded or because he wants to sleep... we need CJ!!!! taking al jefferson for booz and miles is NOT WORTH it. CJ was very important to us in the playoffs and when i think he is finally showing what he can do... he BETTER not be involved in this trade..

Jazz weren't going to use all of the assets. The Boozer TPE = AK's expiring. Probably going to use one or the other. The Harpring TPE = the MLE. Again, only financially viable to use one or the other. But having the flexibility to take on Jefferson's salary WITHOUT giving anything back is what sealed the deal for Utah over Dallas. Now giving up 2 additional draft picks IS a valid argument. Seems pretty high to me. Minny must have threatened to go Cuban on us.

In essence, the way I see it is we traded Boozer + two late firsts for Jefferson. Is that too much? Maybe. But Al can play the 5, Boozer really can't. And we're on the hook for 3 fewer years for Al over what it probably would have taken to sign Carlos (an additional year at $17M).

Would probably have to start with DWill, Mayo is one of the best pure shooting guards already and just 22.
