Valedictorian Denied Diploma

The Valedictorian at a high school in Oklahoma didn't get her diploma because she used the word "hell" in her speech at graduation, after she used the word "heck" in the written version she submitted for approval beforehand. She'll have to submit a written apology to get it. At first I had some sympathy for the student, but then I read this:

"In her speech—inspired by a similar address in "Eclipse: The Twilight Saga"—Kaitlin recounted how annoying it is to be constantly asked what she wants to do as graduation approached. "How the hell do I know?" she said, according to her father. "I've changed my mind so many times."

She should never get her diploma no matter how much she apologizes.

She shouldn't get her diploma and then PKM should impregnate her to teach her a life lesson.

You might go limp when she screams "Oh Edward!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Then again, your name might be Edward and that might do it for you. ;)

Nah, role play always works for me when impregnating punished valedictorians as a life lesson.

Huh, Oklahoma, what a shock. All the loveliness of a Bible Belt state without the nice southern charm and beauty.

Though who cares about the physical diploma though. I don't even know where my HS diploma is. It's not like they can take away the fact she graduated or can tell employers/colleges she didn't.

I honestly wouldn't care about the diploma either. I would much rather just curse like a sailor in my speech.

A few more thoughts on this story. First, the school mascot is a red devil of all things. Second, I didn't see anything about her being in danger of losing her scholarship. Do you have a link about that Pearl? Finally, I think the girl is too smart for her own good. She seems very stubborn and prideful for refusing to apologize. Being smart doesn't mean you get to be above the rules, even if you don't like the rules.

Wow, that school must have some high standards to punish their valedictorian for using the word "hell". I'm positive all the students live up to these high standards.

Come on now, this is about the standards for the relative few students who speak at commencement excercises, which is supposed to be a dignified event. Granted I think the school is going overboard on the matter, but the valedictorian broke the rules and refuses to acknowledge that.

So there was a written rule specifically banning commencement speakers from using the word "hell" in their speech? If not are they just making rules up as they go along and punishing here retroactively for using what's not even a swear word in my book. She switched from heck to hell. Heck, I'll never understand what the hell she was thinking. (switch the words around, they mean the exact same thing in that context)

What about the standards of the principle of the school? He did not act in a professional manner either. Here is the Valedictorian's father's perspective. I feel that the principle is antagonizing the student.

Nootbaar said he and his daughter went to the school Friday to get her diploma and were met by Principal David Smith

"He said 'Shut the door.' I shut the door and he pointed at her and said, 'You and me have a problem,' " Nootbaar said.

Nootbaar said the diploma was on the principal's desk.

"He said right here's your diploma and you're not going to get it," and then told her she would have to write a letter of apology, Nootbar said.

I feel the school is being extremely punitive and vindictive to the Valedictorian. Especially since the Valedictorian claims that the she misspoke. This may have been her largest public speaking event in her life, and the school is unforgiving because of a minor mistake (I don't believe there is that much of a difference between the words hell and heck). The school should be a little more lenient and a little less antagonistic.

I'm on the girl's side on this, give the damn diploma to her. I hate teachers, profs and principals:mad: Yikes!

If they send her the diploma I hope she wipes her butt with it and sends it back.
