"We've used Utah as our example to try to make sure we do things in a way that's consistent and can maintain a certain level of play and a certain level of character," San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich explained to Art Garcia of NBA.com. "They're the best at it"

"The challenge in staying competitive is not making mistakes. It's finding guys that fit the system. It's a matter of really making sure you bring in guys that have both the character and the ability to accept a role that you plan for them. If you're just thinking that because someone is talented it's going to work, it usually doesn't.

Popovich noted: "A lot of teams have gone right into the toilet for five, eight, 10 years before they get back up. I don't think we're going to do that. Whether you're a championship-caliber team is another question, because as we look at championship-caliber teams, every one of them has got a player who's a franchise player. Not a max player. There's a difference between a max player and a franchise player. There aren't too many franchise players and a whole lot of max players. That's the deal. You can count the franchise players on one hand. Until you get one of those, it's not going to happen for you."

"If you're just thinking that because someone is talented it's going to work, it usually doesn't." Like, who knew, eh?

I wonder who he has in mind as the 5 (or less) "franchise players?"

....stacking a deck is important....but you've got to stack your deck with guys that run your system! I don't know that the Heat have done that, do you? If your system is "give me the ball....and clear out of my way"......well, that system will only get you so far! If your system is "put it up....I got bounds"....your going to still have problems winning a 7 game series against a team with brains!

"You can count the franchise players on one hand. Until you get one of those, it's not going to happen for you." (Popovich) I wonder who Pops figures the "franchise" player for Boston was when they won the NBA a couple years back, eh?

I think there are probably more than 5 "franchise" players in the league, although if Pop says so, he's probably right....

Kobe, LeBron, Wade, Durant?

How many other players can really take over a game? ....D. Will is close I guess.

Paul Pierce seemed to be the leader of the Celtics team that won the chip.

Yeah, I spoze, although some might argue Garnett or even (this year) Rondo, but I get the impression that none of them are what Pops would call "franchise players," like Duncan was. I disagree with Pops that you MUST have a "franchise player" (if by that you mean only 5 or fewer players in the league). It sure helps, but I don't see it as bein either (1) absolutely necessary or (2) sufficient, for purposes of winning a championship (see Lebron).

Or even the Pistons of 2004, who did'nt have any clearcut franchise player on their roster.

Was tanking a season to get Duncan also imitating the Jaz, Pop? Or did the imitation start after you got Duncan?
