What's new

Anti-vaccination movement is dealt a loss in court.

So the ignorant twisting of the notion of "personal freedom" does not justify child abuse! What great news for those of us who value logic and reason. Let's hope this catches on.

I don't care if the reasons they use are wrong, I don't think a person should be forced to immunize their kids.

I'm immunized, including several special immunizations against anthrax and such that I got in the Navy. My son is immunized with everything they typically offer/require. I'm not even slightly opposed to immunization. I just don't think they should be forced upon people.

In either case, the child does not have a say in the matter. I don't see why parental authority should outweigh verified knowledge when it comes to the health of their child. It is not the child's fault that it was born to such parents, and it should not be penalized for that misfortune.

I love the way the article is labled "failure to vaccinate children".

It's ok though, we all know there will be forced vaccinations in the future.

I'm ambivalent.

I see not vaccinating children as akin to not feeding them fruits and vegetables. It is seriously abusive to the children. At the same time, a parent should be the primary determinator for a child's medical care. However, does tha textend to blood transfusions? If a child dies because the parents refuse a blood tranfusion, is that criminal? If a child needs a blood transfusion, and the parent object, should the state step in (as they routinely do)? Is there that large of a difference between the two? How about when they die because the parent believe in prayer over medicine?

Parents bare the ultimate responsibility for the welfare of their children. Therefore, I think the manner in which they provide for that child should be up to them. I find it to be a loooong stretch to say that failure to immunize is equivalent to neglect. While the case for immunizations being safe has been conclusively made that doesn't mean a parent has to subject their child to anything that has any side effects or possible side effects. There are bad reactions to immunizations and a known risk factor. This is a situation where I think a person has every right to not act. To force them to act is something I oppose.

Communist ideals.

I think vaccinations are fine. I am and so are my kids. However, forcing them on people is idiotic. If some moron (see Hildale, UT and Colorado City, AZ) wants to rebel and not do it and not get SSNs and homeschool and live in bunkers and all that crap than fine.

They. Have. That. Right.

It sure as **** should be forced upon them if they expect to sit next to my kid in a school classroom.

Otherwise, I'd suggest home-schooling and a plastic bubble.

This is an interesting point that you brign up. I think it gets much murkier when a child is in some extremem medical condition and the parent refuses an medical procedure that saves the childs life. That I am wavering on...

That is a very slippery slope.

Not getting a SSN, homeschooling, and living in a bunker does not significantly interfere with other people getting SSNs, going to public schools, and living above ground. Not vaccinating spreads disease. Try to choose some analogies where there is a negative effect on other people, please.

See "The Waco Texas Massacre", and tell me They. Have. That. Right.

That is a pretty stupid response. I am sure that is all that happened in Waco right. Parents didn't vaccinate their kids so the feds and cops raided them and got ina shoot out. Yup...

Well, I agree. That's one of many reasons why I'm also in favor of doing away with public schools.
