If the Jazz cared enough to throw big money at Al, I think they would have offered him an extension by now to preemptively keep him off the market and avoid a bidding war.

I melted down when they gave Ak the Max. Jefferson while far more valuable than AK is not a max player.
??? Why do you think that? What has Lindsey done in the past to make you say that'll happen?
In fact all indications are to the contrary. Lindsey came out swinging after the TD saying he'll look at each deal & assess whether they are value for money or not.

I'd much rather have AK at max dollars than Al.
AK had potential to be a HOF'er with his all around skills (all the 5x5's he obtained). Al is nothing.

The fact that now that the TD has passed, there is NO reason to continue playing Al if he won't be here next year. They are still playing him because he has a part in their future plans.
I don't think so.. if we're to make the playoffs I think we need him playing well.

Here is the big hole in your thinking. If the Jazz's goal is to make the playoffs every year, and they plan to do so by riding Al to the playoffs this year, why would they let Al walk this summer and miss the playoffs next year?
Why not see what you have in Favors before you extend him this summer, and see if he can take you to the playoffs? You have to do it this year or next. Why wait? Waiting increases the risks you take on Favor's extension.
If Al has no future here, and you want the most "assets", then stop playing Al
What the Jazz say and what they do are two different things.
Well I think their plan is:
- Make it to the playoffs this year, primarily on the backs of Big Al + Sap
- Hopefully Favors & Kanter grow a bit more (Favors' growth this year has been good)
- Offseason: Look at what Big Al & Millsap wants
- Take the best valued deal between them
- If they're both too expensive - Sign someone like Splitter/Landry to pair on a cheap 1-3 year deal
- Splitter + Favors (improved), Kanter (improved) off the bench, Evans, Marvin = our front court
- Hopefully with improvement of Hayward as well we can make the playoffs again in '14
- Even if they miss the playoffs in '14, Favors, Kanter, Hayward would have had heavy minutes
- '15 we'll make the playoffs no question with improved Favors, Kanter, Hayward all going full steam
Bottom line is, missing the playoffs in '14 isn't so bad. Why?
1. It's a great draft class (ask PKM)
2. Serves as a training ground for young guys - see what they're made of
3. It's only 1 year
Is it possible they bring either Big Al or Sap back? Absolutely! Provided they are reasonable contracts.
Well they have to balance out commercial reality as well.
Lindsey mentioned all this in his interview.
- Utah not a big market - commercial reality counts
- Valued contracts
- Assessing FA signings based on value

You can't bring up "commercial reality" in one sentence and then say the Jazz are willing to throw away next season by letting Al and Paul walk.
If commercial reality is important to the Jazz, then Al will be back. The Jazz have to spend the money anyways, Al likes it here, he puts up good numbers, and the Jazz are very profitable for a small market team.
You can't have it both ways.
If commercial reality is important, Al will be the "guy" this year and the next five.
If winning a title is their goal, Al won't play anymore this year.
If you can't we that...

Well Lindsey also mentioned that in a small market like Utah - bad contracts are very hard to fix. This is not the case for big markets.
Also with the new CBA - it seems they'll want to avoid bad long term bloated contracts like the plague.
Commercial reality VS Cap flexibility = the name of the game.

That doesn't explain why Al is playing so much and taking so many shots.
Either they like him more than Kanter/Favors or they don't. This is a business and they play the players they like.
The Jazz will not let Al and Paul walk. One will be back with a bad contract to save face. Every move the Jazz make on the court screams Al will be back.
