MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Andrei Kirilenko is opting out of the final year of a contract that would have paid him $10 million next season with the Minnesota Timberwolves, making him a free agent.

The Chicago Bulls are heading into the 2013 offseason sitting in the red of the NBA's luxury tax. With $77,989,266 in total contracts for next year, Chicago will need to lose some dead weight just to ensure they will not have to pay a tax penalty. Dealing Luol Deng, Carlos Boozer, or both, could free up enough liquid cash to not only get under the luxury tax threshold, but also give the Bulls money to spend this offseason.
Trade Carlos Boozer
So it turns out the Utah Jazz's system tricked the Bulls into buying magic beans when they signed Boozer during the 2010 offseason. The Bulls thought they were getting a 20-and-10 center that would be a perfect complement to Derrick Rose. But instead, they received an undersized power forward without post skills that wants to play outside of the lane and shoot 18-foot jump shots. Chicago would love nothing more than to unburden themselves from the two-years, $32.1 million still owed to Boozer.
Together, Boozer and Deng are set to make $29.575 million next season. Trading or amnestying either of them could actually allow Chicago to become a player in the free agent market. Would David West or Al Jefferson look better in a Bulls uniform than Deng or Boozer?

Posted about this on another thread. I would be more interested in Kirilenko due to his versatility.

Been there, done that. By the time this team is ready to contend, these guys will (and already are) on the downslope of their careers. They are WAY overpaid. Taking on AK, IMO, would require Minny's 1st round pick (top-3 protected only). As for Carlos or Deng, what else can Chicago offer? A draft pick is useless since they will be a playoff team.

Why would Kirilenko opt out? Does he really think he can get more than $10 Mil a year somewhere else? Or does he want to play on a contending team?

I would welcome back AK if the price was right. He could back up SF and PF. He is still an all around good player. But we all know he is not coming back to SLC. Just say no to Boozer. I ****ing hate that guy. Greedy piece of monkey ****.

I'd only be interested if Boozer was amnestied. Put a 6.5 million offer out there. He comes and plays as part of rotation and is traded at the deadline.

He teaches the youngsters a few things and comes back apologizing saying that he always loved Utah and Jerry and the Jazz and never wanted to leave but there was a certain player that rubbed him the wrong way.....Jazzfans (& z) would love him.

Plus wouldn't it be great to get the guy that Milsap replaced for less than Milsap will be demanding?

I'd sign AK to a reasonable deal. We're incredibly thin on the front line. I think he could be very valuable coming off the bench for 24-28 minutes a night to play the 4 alongside Favors/Kanter at the 5.

Only problem is that he's not a stretch-4. You want a guy that can actually SHOOT from 15-ft out. Sorry, I'd rather have Millsap back for what AK will make. Kirilenko must have a long-term deal in place if he's opting out. That, or he's heading home to the Motherland.

So would I. But I doubt we get Millsap for what AK will make, my guess is he'll command more. And there's a give and take there. Millsap is the better mid-range shooter - you'll never run the pick-and-pop for Andrei - but Andrei gives you a better defensive presence. Frankly, I'd be happy with either/both of them back (assuming they're both okay coming off of the bench).

We are soooo beyond Boozer and AK. I wouldn't want a single minute wasted on either of them while Kanter, Favors, or Hayward sit on the bench. Heck, I'd rather watch Gobert play than see a rehash of Boozer or AK.

Best part of that article is after his complaints about Boozer's disappointing terribleness, he suggests Al Jefferson as suitable and desirable upgrade / replacement

He's probably looking for a multi-year deal. A four year $30 million deal might be better for him at this point in his career than a 1 year $10 million one.
