The future is bright in SLC (salary cap analysis)

I'm really interested in that whole salary cap stuff and after all that Hayward talk that is going on and the big question if we can keep the core group together I decided to do a little salary thread. I got all the informations of Larry Coons cbafaq.com . There are some unknowns like this years draft picks so I just worked with the worst finacial scenario(Jazz: #1, GSW: #22).So let's see what next years FA will looks like.

End of this season:

- after this season Derricks new contract obviously starts to count against the cap
- Gordons cap hold will be 200% of this years salary
- RJ, Marvin, Biedrins, Rush and Lucas still count against the cap(I just took this years salary but the cap holds are actually a little higher)

1. act:

- renounce the rights of RJ, Biedrins, Rush and Lucas(the Jazz lose the rights of the players but do not have to wait till this players sign with other teams)
- make Marvin a 3/$15Mil($5,200,000/$4,966,000/$4,834,000) offer if he want more renounce him also
- you don't renounce Gordon because you wanna keep him and want his bird rights

Note: Gordons cap hold is actually $8,630,458, there for the max available cap space will be $11,041,776. So it really changed nothing!

2. act:

- the Jazz sign one(available cap space:$11,041,776) or two(available cap space:$11,041,776+$507,336) Veterans with the salary cap(if they sign two Vets the $507,336 roster charge for the 11th roster spot will be omitted)
- in order to have some negotiation room for Enes and Burks you don't use all that space because you don't want to be in the luxury to early
- the Jazz make these move/s before signing with Gordon or matching the offered contract to have more financial flexibility
- best thing would be to frontload contracts
- 2 players: 3/$12Mil with a team option at least in the last year($4,150,000/$3,963,250/$3,886,750) or
- 1 player : 2/$24Mil with a team option at least in the last year($8,350,000/$7,974,250/$7,675,750)

The Gordon Hayward signing:

- there would be still some cap space avalaible, so they could do a one year deal(not longer!)
- now the important part is how much do we pay Gordon? The most I would give him is 4/$51Mil($13,701,250/$12,700,000/$12,098,750/$12,500,000) and I think it is a little much
- if he wants more I would wait and see what a Contract he gets offered(and there will be a good chance that it will be backloaded which would screw our future cap situation pretty good)
- there have to be 13 players on the roster. I just leave that out but there is still money and they can sign the 2nd round picks or other minimum type salarys

Question: What do guys think he will get offered in FA?

End of the 2014-2015 season / Start of the 2015-16 season:

- With all the FA signings, the draft and Gordons extension I think we have a good shot at the POs.
- For the salary porpuse let's just say we have the worst record of all PO teams(which is unlikely because of the weak east) which would give us the 15th pick
- New contracts for Enes and Alec(the best thing would be to this in the beginning of the season after we sign with Gordon)
- We have about $22,818,447 before we have to pay luxury tax, if this is not enough we have still the possibility to cut one of the Vets
- Enes 4/$44Mil($11,500,000/$11,000,000/$11,000,000/$10,500,000)
- Alec 4/$36Mil($9,500,000/$9,500,000/$8,787,500/$8,212,500)

So it is really manageable to not go over the luxury tax threshold. And we still could just cut one of the veterans in order to free up some salary. In order to not pay luxury tax in 2016/17 it may be necessary to move our 2016 first round pick for a future pick. Our first really problem will be the 2017/18 season. Before the season starts we will have about $17Mil to get 5+2(draft picks)players. And I really think DL did a good job in taking the 2017 GSW #1 draft pick! We could have some problems with keeping Trey (Rudy) but if the franchise is all about winning they have to pay some taxes.

Obviously after that season it will be more difficult and we might lose some pieces and I think after that season there is not much of an chance to keep all players together but untill now this could be one exciting journey!

I really would love to see the core guys grow together and win together so I'm all pro keeping the guys together. And I really believe that this is the plan. The good thing is, and I left that out till this point on porpuse, that the early projection for the salary cap is $62,100,000 and for the luxury tax threshold is $75,700,000. So we should have even more financial leeway. I was really down on Gordon like some of you but after I saw all that possibilites and that additional cap space could be in our favor if we are also able to extend Gordon.

Note: This is obviously not perfect so please tell me if I made mistakes. If there are questions please let us now. I'm pretty sure here are enough posters how are familiar with the new cba.

What are your thoughts? What should we do?

Good post, the cap levels probably get raised a little by 2017/2018 making us in even better shape than shown. The only question now is who will emerge as the superstar to get us through OKC.

Nice work, I'll have to comb through this later to grasp your full big picture.

A couple things that stood out: 1) The Jazz will have the room MLE next summer if they use all their cap room. 2) Your #1 rookie scale is off by at least $200k in 2015-16. Oladipo in 2nd year will get $4.978mm so this year's # 1 should be around $5.1mm or so (minor detail).

About 1): You're right but the question will be how smart it is to use it especieally if they are near the luxury threshold.

About 2): Could be but I used the scale from realgm so it should be right except their infos are wrong.

The vast majority of 1st rounder sign for 120% of that scale. Look at Anthony Davis this year: $4.4798mm x 1.2 = $5.37576mm, which is what Shamsports.com has listed.

There are a few exceptions, most involving late round SAS picks and also Oladipo last year. Orlando had a bit of leverage agreeing to draft him #1 overall while signing him to more than the rookie scale but no the 120% max. This year will have no discount for 1-4, at minimum. Better count on $5.75868mm in 2015-2016.

**EDIT** NVM on Oladipo. He's getting 120% of the 2nd pick. Bennett is getting 120% of the 1st.

Horrible post and any optimism is NOT allowed here, don't you know the rules? Everything about the Jazz is bad, the FO, the coach, the players. Any other opinion is dumb and a blind homer or working for PR.

A team can sign a rookie for as little as 80% or as much as 120% of the scale salary figure. So for our 2014 #1 Pick I used above it would be as little as $3,673,760 or as much as $5,510,640. This could make things more difficult but with the rise of the salary cap and the luxury threshold it should be not much of a problem.

On his podcast, David Locke has addressed this issue a number of times. Now, I don't necessarily consider Locke the final word on this or anything else, but he is relatively well-informed, and according to him, there is not really any significant salary constraints at this point. We could resign Hayward at, say, $12 million without taking a big hit on the salary cap given how the current salary structure exists and the timing when we need to resign other players (Burke specifically). Based on what he says, the oft-expressed concern here that resigning Hayward at or around the above price will hamstring the Jazz financially is simply not true. Locke also seems to think that is it highly likely that Hayward resigns. Whether this is true, we'll see, but it appears that so much worrying and gnashing of teeth about salary and salary cap issues is perhaps not warranted at this point.

Have any teams signed a rookie, especially a first rounder, to less than the 100% of the rookie scale for their pick position?

Nice thread. And everyone who complains that we got nothing for Sap and Al needs to understand this is why we did not make a trade. We wanted the flexibility - not more salary with assets that didn't fit. In addition, this flexibility could be a big deal come draft day the next several years. Tanking is not the only way to move up if you have a young player you are willing to move and cap space. Who knows how it will shake out but we are well positioned.
