**OFFICIAL** Mount Rushmore discussion thread

....look! Magic's announcement literally SHOOK the NBA to it's knees! The ramifications were enormous and unprecedented! The Aids virus was catapulted back on to the front page and stayed there for weeks! The entire NBA went into a state of shock and mourning! NBA players began an unprecedented campaign to start wearing condoms and stop creating babies out of wedlock! Oh, wait! Scratch that last point or two!

you should stop talking about basketball ever! before AIDS people considered Magic as THE GOAT! you probably didn't even know that right! you probably never even watched showtime lakers, right!

...hey, I wouldn't have Johnson on my Mount Rushmore...if I hadn't witnessed "showtime" PERSONALLY!

bill russell avg 15/22.5/4.3 in his career... that's not HOF worthy? and he was probably top 2 in blocks. wilt had 23 blocks in 1 game. i'm sure russell had many games with 15+ blocks. he probably avg 6-8 blocks in his CAREER.

22 rebounds a game is certainly a HOF stat, but 15 points a game is not! As far as blocked shots are concerned, Russell was actually better than Wilt in the fact that when Wilt blocked a shot he slapped the ball 3 rows into the stands.....when Russell blocked a shot he would also grab the ball, thus giving his team the possession! But the fact remains, Wilt had the much better stats and he did win 2 championships! I'm not bouncing Jabbar off the hill, so I'm going to have to bounce Jordan or Magic. If you want me to change my vote, I'll bounce Magic and put Russell up there!

...well, the biggest thing Magic Johnson ever contributed to the NBA was the "Aids" virus! But I had him on my list for another reason! Actually, I have 3 of your 4 on my list....and here's why:

I got to have Kareem (got career stats AND championships coming out of the ying-yang!) Wilt (not as many championships, 2 I believe....but dominated the game statistically for more than a decade....caused the league to create the "3 second lane" and once average 50 points a game! Also led the league in assists one year!) Michael Jordan only because of the championships and overwhelming clutch performances when everything was on the line. And finally, Magic Johnson....has the championship rings, played the game the right way, made EVERYBODY on his team better.....and beats out Larry Bird because of his overall versatility!

P.S. Notice no white guys on my list! And you guys thought I was a racist!!!

So true, actual HIV.... But Magic put a name to the disease AIDS and help to start break down the barriers and misconceptions of HIV and AIDS. He probably had the greates of-court influence for good!!!

a guy with 2pts and 22reb career avg would be good enough HOF. first ballot lock.

russell was the ultimate rim protector. that was his job. and he did that better than anybody else. he was also very underrated playmaker. just look at his assist numbers. like they say defense wins championship. russell had underrated size, athleticism, and was one of the most instinctive defender ever walked on earth. HOF is more than just scoring. rodman is a HOF and he doesn't even try to score.

You've doomed us all.

If you had to pick a person from the modern era to be on Mount Rushmore (past MJ era), who would it be?

Tim Duncan, Shaq, Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Dirk, etc.

After his career is over, I'd say LeBron.

Right now...it's between Duncan and Shaq. For some reason I'm leaning Duncan.

Big O
Kareem
MJ
Stockton

So first, I am a homer, and I feel that someone who holds 2 career all time stat records that likely will never be broken needs to be included, so Stock is a go for me.

The others are ones I feel contributed most to the game in their era and carried the game into the next. Kareem bridged eras from the split league days to the pre-modern era and always played at a level that met or exceeded any player before or since. Big O was the first player of his kind really and averaging a triple double for an entire season is the most revolutionary thing in basketball and will likely never be equaled. MJ ushered in the "modern" era of basketball and the style of play that changed an entire generation and captured the attention of the world.

He probably had the greatest off-court influence for good!!!

...it was his "off court" activity that got him in trouble in the first place! Can't make a martyr out of him for that! If he hadn't been running around on his wife like an "alley cat" he would probably have broken a few records and had possibly a few more rings, don't ya think?

...if they let a guy who averaged 2 points and 22 rebounds a game in the HOF....they should burn the building down! And frankly, I have no idea how that puke Rodman got in! He was so one dimensional on the court, a real jerk to boot, and pathetically flawed in so many other areas on the court...it's ludicrous that he got voted in! In addition, both ON and OFF the court he was a virtual "eyesore" with all those tattoo's and body piercings! Plus, he's now been exposed as a "alcoholiack" and probably a drug user...he should be kicked out of the HOF!

Wilts stats dwarf Russells!
31,000 points to 14,000 points.
54% shooting to 44% shooting.
24,000 rebounds to 21,000 rebounds.
4,600 assists to 4,100 assists.
PLUS Wilt NEVER fouled out of a basketball game while playing in the NBA!

Russell always said basketball was a "team" game....and he played on way better teams than Wilt did with alot of smarter ballplayers to boot! Wilt stays on Mount Rushmore!

sorry dude, it doesn't work that way. stockton just doesn't have any argument. even if stockton won multiple championships, no right minded basketball fan would ever put him above magic.
