What kind of player can Gobert be?

Will not affect motor

More body weight negates his quickness and maybe his motor. some guys are better being skinny.

What we are talking about adding bulk and muscle, but maintaining good conditioning (so let's put aside the obvious fact that if he adds fat and is in poor condition, then motor and quickness will both be lost).

Adding muscle, there is no reason why motor should be affected. Think Moses Malone, Karl Malone, Nate Thurmond, Willis Reed, Wilt, early career Shaq, Bill Russell, Denis Rodman, Elvin Hayes.

I can see how quickness could be slightly affected since you have more mass to move around the floor, but given the other advantages, very much worth the tradeoff.

I don't see Gobert ever developing much of an offensive game...but could potentially be a great defender.
It'll suck to watch him tear it up in Atlanta next year.

Noah is much too versatile, skilled, and has a great all around game.

I like the Chandler comparison alot more. (a defensive specialist and little else)
All chandler does is play great defense. He is not a ball handler, not a really great rebounder, not a very good passer, etc etc.
chandlers highest pt average for his career is 11 pts. (his career average is 8.7)
chandlers highest rebound average is 12.4 which is very good but in his 13 year career he only averaged over 10 rebounds per game 3 times. (his career average is 9.1)

Gobert should just model his game after chandler. Block/altering shots and getting alley oops and rebounds plus some garbage putbacks on the offensive glass

We're really comparing Gobert to Noah and Chandler in this thread?

At some point in their careers, Noah and Chandler were top centers in the NBA. I should add that I think Noah currently is one of the top centers in the league…one of the top players overall.

I would be shocked if Gobert was anything close to those guys.

Fine.

I think gobert can maybe one day be as good as thabeet, sene, or fessenko.

Thats much more fun

Putting on too much muscle too fast can also be dangerous for a skinny big. Ankles shins and knees. Kareem was crazy skinny for his first five years or so. He's way young have patience.

Realism isn't always more fun, but it is far more useful in life.

I would rather talk about who he should model his game after and who he should aspire to be as great as.

I sure hope his coaches are not taking the realistic approach and saying "rudy we dont ever see you becoming as good as guys like noah or chandler so just watch this footage of hasheem thabeet and try to play like him."

Right…that's what I'm saying.

Look, I can model my game after LeBron James all I want, and no matter what I do, I ain't gonna be a player like LeBron James. I'm not saying he should try to play like Thabeet, I'm just saying I don't ever see him as being as good as Noah or Chandler. This ain't that difficult.

Im saying that people probably dont watch you play bball and think "man he looks and plays similar to lebron."

Im not saying Rudy is equal to chandler.

Im saying they are both over 7 feet tall, both good jumpers, both quick for thier size, both have good motors, both have good timing/instincts for shot blocking, both very limited offensively.

Dont see what the big deal is to say they are similar types of players and i could see rudy being like chandler in the future if he improves a good amount

I would be thrilled if he could be the next Mark Eaton, Mark Eaton lite that is. Like Eaton, Gobert has little to no offense. Gobert might have a slight edge in athletic ability, but not by much. The thing Eaton has over Gobert is a massive presence in post defense and being a lane clogged with his length and girth. I don't think Gobert will ever possess Eaton's strength, and body mass.
