Why does everyone want Ariza... He is a contract year guy. I think I'd rather have Jefferson back for a one-year minimum deal than sign Ariza to what he will command. Ariza will get overpaid and be basically untradeable by January.

For me it goes Ariza/Williams, Jefferson

OR

Jefferson, Ariza/Williams

Depending on if we are going for wins or one more years of developments. AKA THE TANK!

Ariza's been a contract year guy many times over in his career though. last year he was awesome and played great in the playoffs, check out these #'s;

37mpg 4.7-9.8fg's (48%), 2.3-5.1 3pt fg's (45%), 1.9-2.5ft's (78%) 8.9rebs 1.7asts 0.4blks 1.5stls 13.6 ppg

Im pretty sure I read a story saying that the Wiz top priority is resigning Marcin Gortat, so maybe Ariza can be had.

A 3 year deal is best, 4 makes me nervous.

If the Jazz sign Ariza what does that mean for Hayward?

I simply hope we pass on everyone who doesn't bring real veteran leadership and if possible do that without providing wins. Get cash but do it in practice mainly.
Pick another 7-12 draftpick next summer to fill that SF/PF spot somehow, add accordingly via free agency/trades and then attack in Dante's second year.

Then sounds like Jefferson is your man.

Last year was his best year and he benefited from being set up by John Wall. I don't have the link, but heard he had one of the highest percentage of assisted baskets. I'm not sure we have anyone to set him up as well as he was set up last year.

I've also heard his price tag could run as high as 10 M a year. He's 29 so he'll be on his way out when our core is ready to compete. It just feels like the fit and contract would be more than I'd be willing to do. I'd rather throw the max at Parsons than sign Ariza for 3-4 years at 25M-35M.

I think we are developing (tanking) for at least another year.

I'd be on board with a tank if it involves competent coaching focused on building team defense shooting and other needed skills.

Then I'd say lets sign Hayward with Williams or Jefferson as a back up instead of signing Ariza as starting SF.

Me too... I'd also like a more entertaining tank. More Gobert, Exum, Burks, less RJ and Marvin. I say we bring one of them back. Both are super pros.

Hayward is a SG. Ariza is a SF. Signing Ariza puts the Jazz in something like this:

Burke (30 mins a game), Exum (13 mins a game), someone else (3-5 mins a game)
Hayward (28 mins a game), Exum (10 mins a game), Burks (10 mins a game)
Ariza (30 mins a game), Hood (13-15 mins a game), Hayward (3-5 mins a game)
Favors (30 mins a game), Kanter (13-15 mins a game), FA (3-5 mins a game)
FA (25 mins a game), Kanter (13-15 mins a game), Gobert (whatever is left).

If Hayward is brought back, it probably means the end of Burks in Utah. Signing a SF has little to no effect on Burks/Hayward. Also, due to defense and running a system offense, it would not surprise me at all if Kanter's minutes drop during the season and Gobert's rise and Gobert does simple things, like running the floor, setting good, early picks, and running the offense and not Alfense.

We need to sign a backup PG, a SF and a big man.

Yea because Kanter listens to Jefferson. I think this notion of veteran leadership is overplayed just a little. It is nice to have guys when you have rookies because they don't know how to find the bathroom but our Core have been in the league for 3-5 years now. They should be taking the leadership role. Now I am not against getting a vet or two if they know their place which is to play backup minutes and show the guys the rope. I don't know if AJ is going to be happy sitting on the bench more this year and I will scream if he is given the same minutes he got last year.

Management views Hayward as a SG. They are trying to find a legit SF. That is Ariza. Burks is a bench scorer. He isn't on their level, sorry. If we can get Hayward and Ariza, we are trading Burks if at all possible.

Basically, we don't need to tank but we also don't need to waste valuable minutes or salary cap space on mediocre vets just to help us win a few extra games.
