They are a couple of huge athletic women, that's for damn sure.
All large, athletic people are called scary?

Do not pretend that you enter any of these conversations without your mind already made up on race.
My mind is made up on a lot of things, based on the weight of the evidence. Even if it turns out there is a long history of referring to non-black female tennis players as scary-looking, that doesn't change all the problems with race in our society, because we have so much evidence in other ways. However, it would show that I was wrong on this one issue, should you be able to produce evidence. When evidence has been produced, i have acknowledged such errors in the past.
I certainly don't consider it racist. There are a ton of white women that I would say are scary to look at. Is that racist?
It is not my job to produce evidence to disprove your unsupported charge of racism int his case.
You have failed compeltely. Not a single person has bought in.
My support is the general cultural association of black people as being scary; this association is well-studied, well-supported, and well-known. The counter would be to show that there is a different, better explanation for the comment. Any time you're ready.
If I were to state a particular goal, it would not be to have people "buy in", but to give some thought to the issue. Perhaps that failed, perhaps not.
So according to your logic here, this dude called them scary looking only because they are African American? Maybe he thinks very muscular women are scary, no matter the race. Like I said, in this case it's just too much of a stretch to call it racist, IMO.No, that is a different form of prejudice. I'm sure there are some commonalities to the reasons you would call some white women scary (for example, scars, non-symmetry, deformity, poor personal hygiene, etc., although your list may not include any of these). Which of those commonalities apply to the Williams sisters?
Racist? By itself this comment is not enough for me to level that charge. If the guy that said this has a history of only, or unfairly harshly, attacking black athletes then that would lend weight to your charge.

I'll flip that around. How many other times has this dude referred to blacks as scary?
Since I refer to racism as a cultural phenomenon, and not an individual one, what matters is the cultural context, not the history of the individual.
So this Russian dude not only knows the cultural context of his remarks, but chose to use it at this exact time? Not buying it.Only? Possibly, but probably not. Very few things said or done have a single cause or influence.
Maybe someone will find a quote or two supporting this notion.
I've been asking for quotes from anyone, not just Tarpishchev, because I'm referring to a cultural construct, not a person. If you like, I can offer other quotes about black people being scary even when there is no threat of violence.

In your previous posts you've called for a history from people to try and prove their thinking. I'll flip that around. How many other times has this dude referred to blacks as scary?
It failed in the respect that people had already thought about it before your posts. But no one supports your charge here, not even those that normally do.
Now were these comments:
Sexist? perhaps.
Idiotic? Certainly.
Rude? Absolutely.

The part where he called them scary to look at was racist.
Without exaggerating even a little, I co-sign One Brow's statements in this thread. And, while I already had my own perspective on this issue, One Brow's perspective has made me reconsider the points I would emphasize if given the opportunity to discuss these matters in the future.
Its not "how" and "someone", it's the cultural memes surrounding us and this particular person with no history of violence.
The point is that if the Williams sisters were Hispanic, they wouldn't have been described as scary.
The only post of this version of you I've liked. Congrats.[size/HUGE] boobs [/size];919597 said:No he's being stupid. In Russia we call most women scary because they look like their mothers mated with ogre. Only a few are pretty and ironically we make them all play tennis. It is trick advertisement to make world think are mail order brides are not hideous.
Lol, It baffles me how self-centered some Americans can sometimes be. Believe me, Russian cultural memes have very little to do with American ones. They also don't have much if any history or experience with black, Hispanic, "Asian" population. If you judge the intentions of a Russian by applying American cultural context to it, you are doing it wrong.
Context is all when you talk about racism. You can say the most racially charged words without meaning it in any demeaning way, without trying to hurt anyone, without ever thinking any less of another race, or you can be blatantly racist in the most obscure ways.
