This morning the Orion Spacecraft took its first space test flight. It is an unmanned test flight that will take 4-5 hours. Then it will re-enter the atmosphere and splash down off the coast of Baja California. U.S. Navy ships are in the area on standby.

I think it is long past time that America had its own ability to get into space (even though we are still not quite there). We should be leading the world in sea and space exploration and discovery (among other thins) imo.

Thoughts?

The USA should be a world leader in meteorology, technology, and blowing stray boats out of the sea.. imo.

I'm not sure what you mean. Since when have we not had the ability to get into space? Are you referring to the termination of the space shuttle program? That was done so NASA can concentrate on much more ambitious programs like this one.

I am talking about our own ability to put astronauts into space. Not relying on others. I realize they stopped the old program to free up funds. But having a lapse like that is poor management. it won't be till roughly 2020 before the Orion Spaceship is even manned.

Does anyone know how many are being built?

I tend to go with the conspiracy folks when it comes to this stuff. I would bet my life that behind closed doors, the USA is light years ahead of any other country and has been since day one. All the stuff we are hearing on the news is nothing more than a sideshow to keep the public from asking too many questions.

IMO, Space, and the contents thereof, will be bigger than the WWW in the next ten to twenty years.

No country currently has the ability to get people to space. The best that can be done is low earth orbit (ISS is only a couple of hundred miles up). That was the case when the shuttle program was active, and it still is. Last time the U.S. had the capacity to escape earth's immediate vicinity was in the 1970s.

Hopefully, in 2036, Jason will let you back for an umpteenth time just so I can bust your balls to tell you you were wrong.

Something doesn't add up here. Maybe we should dig up those soup cans, strap a computer to them and revive our space program.

Smartphones will make space obsolete within 5 years tbh

Don't want to get in a boring argument over what "space" is but the Space Shuttle has travelled upwards of 400 miles from earth. I think that distance constitutes pretty much everyone's definition of outer space.

400 miles from earth = outer space

snorkeling = exploring the depths of the Mariana Trench

Oh, I get it now. Arguably the most advanced nation the world has ever seen has actually digressed over the last fifty years. Naturally. Like I said, if you think that the United States hasn't been exploring, sending men/women, sending probes, and taking pictures of outer space since the 70's, then I really don't know what to say. "We've landed on the moon!"

So ****ing wrong.

See my above response to Siromar. Maybe I am so ****ing wrong. Maybe I am so ****ing right also. Doesn't matter, really.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. The U.S. can still easily send spaceships anywhere in the solar system. They can land robots that weigh a lot more than a human on Mars and elsewhere. The Apollo program was a vastly expensive venture that had little scientific return. Once that was concluded, no country was inclined to dump a truckload of money and resources into developing another manned deep space system. Now the technology has come far enough to make it more feasible using modest resources.

Conspiracy theorists are total dumbasses, and you never struck me as one.

I agree with much of what you said, especially the last part.

Question: since when has the government cared about cost or taxpayer money? Publicly, I don't doubt they report that they won't spend anymore money on DSE, but I'd be willing to bet they spend more today than they have at any other time, but hide it under military spending or "defense".

I am a dumbass though, so there is always that.

The government very much does care about taxpayer money. They're much more willing to award hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies to their current/future employers than spend a few billion of trivialities like "science" and "understanding" that won't even get them a bigger yacht. We know what the NASA budget is, and how it's being spent. There are no secret organizations doing deep space exploration in hiding. Those are massive endeavors that require cooperation from thousands of experts across the globe.

Of course the government does have plenty of classified military space programs, like spy satellite and probably orbital missiles and such. Just not deep space exploration, as that has no immediate financial returns.

And I meant you never struck me as a conspiracy theorist. The fact you're a dumbass should go without saying!
