What's new

Woj: Don to the Cavs for Markkanen, Agbaji, Sexton, three unprotected 1sts, two swaps, and a partridge in a pear tree.

The full haul the Jazz got for Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert:
Malik Beasley
Leandro Bolmaro
Walker Kessler (No.22 pick)
Jarred Vanderbilt
Collin Sexton
Lauri Markkanen
Ochai Agbaji (No.14 pick)
Talen Horton-Tucker
Stanley Johnson
7 1st round picks (unprotected)
3 1st round picks swaps

I forget to add:
$400M in salary trade away

So as I read through this one thing that everyone is overlooking is the sheer appreciation for Kevin Durant.

Hear me out.

KD pigeon holed himself in his trade demands when he or his team put out the whole "them or me" scenario with Steve Nash and the GM. Once that happened, it wasn't very long afterwards that KD folded and said "okay, run it back".

2 weeks or so later we have a mountain of picks and some promising young players to potentially build around.

So let's join in a round of applause for KD's stupidity!

The thread on Danny Ainge had a really good article on him, they were looking back at his past teams and the deals that formed them. Danny believes that you are either a championship contender or you should be blowing the team up for draft picks to rebuild. Danny has never accepted just being a good team. This mindset is needed desperately here we have always been ok just being good. Even listening to Locke the other day admit that he likes us just being a good team.

Amen!

FWIW the Jazz have not formally announced the Don trade yet.
Ainge/Zanik could potentially be calling around to add a 3rd team into the deal to take on at least one of the vets still on the roster for additional draft capital.

I believe Ainge is doing a great job here.

Did anyone address the conflicting reporting between Woj and Begley, regarding the following trade iteration: Robinson, Barrett, + 3 unprotected picks?

Begley back in ?July? reported that Jazz asked for that but the Knicks rejected it.

Now Woj just the other day reported that was the knicks offer (back in July) but the Jazz rejected it.

Woj appears to be lying/doing knicks damage control. Now all these podcast are reporting Woj’s gaslighting.

I can’t find anything on this. I hate media gaslighting. #truth

Woj is the mouthpiece for Leon Rose who is embarrassed as **** for getting clowned by Ainge so he told him to leak a lie to try and save face.

I was thinking about this earlier. I was fully on board with taking Miami’s best offer if it was the best one available if it meant getting a deal done before training camp.

Their absolute best offer would have been:

Tyler Herro
Duncan Robinson
Nikola Jovic
23/27/29 unprotected 1sts
26/28 pick swaps

We ended up getting a 2025 unprotected 1st instead of a 2023 unprotected 1st.

Way better salary, player and positive asset in Markannen vs Robinson who is absolutely a negative asset (that contract is one of the worst in the league).

We got the 14th overall pick vs the 27th overall pick in the 2022 draft.

Sexton on a 4/72M deal vs Herro on 4/120M deal (guessing he gets close to RJ money). I like Sexton the most out of the three for the role he is going to be in.

All of that to say that the extra value we got in the Cleveland deal just made it that much better. A ton of extra value shows when you break it down.

Final couple random thoughts on why this is still hilarious.

- Knicks fans are loud dumb. They think Rose passed on this. He played hardball and thought he could get the guy he wanted at a discount. He didn't walk away... Danny did and then Leon got slapped upside the head with a Woj bomb. If Rose could rewind to a week ago he would do RJ+3 UPP and Grimes and be done with it. All their actions led to this... they aren't building around the kids now... they had a chance to get a lotto pick and swapped it for picks they'd like to consolidate now.

- Danny deserves a **** ton of credit for getting Ryan to buy into a rebuild. It was the right thing to do. JZ gets a ton of credit too.

- Finally - This really will remind MFers who forgot about DRE... I mean Danny. Next time he is on the phone he can say with credibility "Your offer isn't good enough... if you really want this I need your best offer... if I hang up this phone without a deal you will hear about the trade we will do from Woj cuz I ain't calling back here". No one will try to call his bluff for a while.

Miami is also a prime Bogey target imo... if Bogey isn't already making flights for LA. So we preserve them as a trade destination.

Who’s Woj?

It’s a wrapski for ole boy. It’s Sham’s world now.

Bingo. That is why I have been scratching my head about the "we need to give the Lakers our vets plus stuff we got from our trades" crowd. There are other teams. And they come without the need to buy out Westbrook. Now when Danny says "this is what we need, " people believe him. If the Lakers are only offering one pick, screw 'em.

We got the 14th overall pick vs the 27th overall pick in the 2022.

Do you like Agbaji better than Jovic?

He went 13 spots ahead of Jovic, but during the run up to the draft I kinda fell in love with Jovic.

But 14th selection is likely better than the player selected 27th. AND I feel more confident in Cavs’ picks being more valuable than Heat’s, 2025 - 2029.

I’d much rather get LA’s unprotected firsts. Better than anything we get from Miami.

I think you have a mental block about Westbrook. The returning salary from Miami in a deal like that is likely a lot worse.

Also, the goal is the top of the Lakers' draft when they are likely to be in the ditch. So, better picks and a less burdensome contract.

The money that will be paid out to Westbrook will be spent one way or another, whether he's here or isn't.
