Netflix recs?

Finished Sandman. Truly breathtaking. Do I miss the little side-stories that were in the comics? Yes, but I understand why they mostly cut those out, even without the Gaiman stuff. It was truly beautiful, casting was phenomenal (Somehow this Jacob Anderson has now played 2 of the gothiest characters from modern literature), the special FX were phenomenal without detracting from the story. 9/10. Defnitely should watch it.

And now I've decided to watch thru all the Tarantino movies.

How many Tarantino movies have you seen? ...or not seen?

Really enjoyed American Primeval
Maybe I just know too much about the actual story but this just didn't do it for me. It's almost in no way historically accurate and other than that I found the story line kind of boring and derivative, with too many cliches. Maybe my expectations were just too high for it to begin with. Overall found it pretty meh.

Are you talking about the Mountain Meadow Massacre in particular? I'd like to learn more about that. Do you have any recommendations, either fictional or non-fiction where I could get a better understanding of what happened? I mean I have the Utah public school version and I have stuff like American Primeval.

Eh. Historical events can be represented many ways depending on your opinion.

Start here. This is the definitive history of the massacre. We have a copy of this from the first printing that was passed along in my wife's family as she has family members who were involved in this from the beginning, as well as being tangentially related to Juanita Brooks and her family.

The Church put huge pressure on Juanita to rewrite the history as it claims Brigham Young and other church leaders were accessories after the fact. But she refused to edit what she had meticulously researched.

Also, if you get a chance to visit the site of the memorial it is worth the trip. They show exactly where the encampment was initially and what path the mormons lead the wagon train folks along while setting up the massacre and exactly how it went down. You can hike along the path they were forced to walk just before the mormons opened fire and up to the point where the local indians helped massacre the women and children. It is straight horrifying. We have been there a few times and walked the path a couple of times. Very sobering. They show the ravines where the human remains were found and a couple of them still have remains that were left in situ out of respect for the dead.

Little of what is portrayed in American Primeval actually happened. It very very loosely pulled from minor and questionable historical accounts. So as a fictional representation to evoke a shock-factor around life at that time in the rugged frontier it is mildly entertaining, but hardly to be viewed as historical in any even remotely serious context.

Yes but so many people are talking like it's a definitive history of the MMM and it isn't. My wife's sister's went crazy over it, said it proved Mormons were evil and talked about the movie like it was an expose of Mormons and their blood lust. And that was just a couple people we happen to know. And I think the victims deserve a little more respect than that.
