Just so everyone is perfectly crystal clear here, we will not have another opportunity like this. Giannis is truly special. 1/1. Would provide everything we’re dying for. Has actual moral fiber to him. Is a dog. And just completely dominant.
He is not a run of the mill all-star. He’s not a promising young player that 4/5 times doesn’t pan out. The real ****ing deal. He is a perennial top-3 player in the NBA and might actually be at his peak right now.
Simultaneously, we don’t have enough roster spots for all the of picks coming down the pike. We have even fewer developmental opportunities. We’re an ascending team ready to pop which multiplies those prior points. We are not at our ceiling but it’s coming into view.
You do all of this to get the players to get you to the mountaintop which is extraordinarily difficult to do. We amassed more picks than we could ever actually develop which means the excess are to do something exactly like this. And now that we might be perfectly positioned to actually do it, we got people going soft.
We can maybe get him right now if we blow the Bucks away with sheer volume of picks (that are unlikely to be very good anyway). With Key, Lauri, Giannis, and the ‘26 pick we are fighting for a ring next year. We will be a free agent destination at that point (to round out the roster), and still with some flexibility in hand. I do not believe that Giannis leaves an honest to goodness contender in free agency.
The kids are about to get paid, and once that happens getting a windfall opportunity kind of dries up. There is no “next” two-way, all-world, dominant players that go to the mat every game that are going to be available.
I’m convinced after hearing the ideas thrown around by apparently knowledgeable people that we can pull this off and keep basically all of our best stuff.
