Jazzfanz: Racist, Sexist, Anti-gay remarks Ok. Swears and All Caps Not Ok.

I've found the Jazzfanz GD board is a nice little slice of Utah sports fan americana. It's given me a unique look into the psyche of the typical Utah Jazz/sports fan that I was never really all that familiar with.

I suck at sports. I'm short. Not athletic. I've done just about everything "non-sporty" one can do to their body throughout my young life. I made fun of jocks in High school and took their abuse as well. All in all, I've generally been a "**** sports" type of guy. Until I fell in deep, deep love with the Utah Jazz.

Since joining JF and sharing my love of the Jazz with others, I've noticed that many of the stereotypes I had of "sports-types" reins true on these boards. Lots of ignorant, racist, sexist, anti-gay remarks are the norm around here, with barely a bat of an eye. While the minute anyone even hints at violence, cussin, or other dirty things neg reps are spread and even infractions.

This is bull ****, and I think it has to do with many factors. One being that Utah is a conservative state and somehow calling people camel jockey's and disrespecting women is cool in those circles, for some. Another is this board is run by members who feel its important to enforce some moral rules (family friendly) on this board, but definitely not when it come to a MODERATOR calling people camel jockey's. Call me a hater all day, but I'm calling it like it is. There's a double standard being enforced here and its stupid. OB may go far in his critiques and posts, but the dude is the only one here who brings more truth, which many here are unable to process. Why? Cause it proves you are who you don't think you are, or don't want to be. A dick.

I know this has been brought up many times and we've hashed through it. But don't you think it's funny that there are maybe 2 women who post on this site. We've pretty much scared off all the gay members. This board is a collection of young to middle aged white dudes, and some of them think it's ok to call other races "colored". ****ing wow.

I have no idea where I'm going with this, but reading the GD board lately has made me feel like I'm participating in some kind of closet white power rally and it's making me ill. Think about it folks and please share your thoughts.

I'm late to this party, but here are my two pennies. Pearl Watson is really the only worthless bag of **** on this forum. DutchRudder gets a pass because his country is like 30 years behind; let's pray for any potential offspring. BeanClown gets a pass because although he's an ignorant fool, he has at least shown that he can change an opinion to some degree. Of course, KkkarolinaJazz gets a pass because HIS WIFE IS BLACK...!!!, and Stroked gets a pass because he has 1/3rd of an extra chromosome. Overall, we're just like everyone else, full of flaws and trying to ever-improve.

Let's be real, here. Jazzfanz is the second-worst basketball message board (shout out to the horrible Clutchfans) I've ever seen and the worst I've ever been a part of. All of these complaints, and many more, are wholly valid. But when the actual moderation of the board doesn't reflect its rules, and years of borderline racist, offensive, sophomoric, and decidedly not family-friendly content go unmoderated, it's kind of on you to realize that Jazzfanz has a culture that isn't going to change. You can accept that and continue to read the board because you're looking for Utah Jazz content, or you can accept that and leave.

The one thing you probably can't do is change it.

Reading some of the other basketball forums, like Pacers Digest (to name-drop one of the really good ones) and then coming back to Jazzfanz is a bit of an ice-water shock. When you see people engaged in intelligent, mature conversations without the emphasis on "humor" and name-calling we have here, in a place where the rules are actually enforced in a clear way, it becomes obvious that good moderation and good conversation are not actually impossible dreams.

The crappiness of this board isn't because most Jazz fans are jerks. It's because most Jazz fans who aren't jerks either stopped posting here or never started.

Let's be real here, people who bitch, cry, piss and moan about all the meanies on teh webz need to untuck their peter and grow a pair of balls. I really do miss you as a poster, Tickler, because you were always an easy target. Why don't you cry a little harder, keep lurking on the 2nd worst ball forum on the web while you claim to hate it, and seriously, throw yourself out of a hot air balloon. *sniffle*

ok

s because my opinion is not the norm it should be kept to myself?

Of course not, Rudder. In America you're free to be as big of an ******* as you want. I'm walking proof.

On topic, I love BabyWienerzz and support his blubbering.

I don't remember any posters here by name but every time I post somebody comes out of the woodwork to reference some past beef with me. I mean, I remember a few of the good people. But most of you blur together in a sort of fogwall of suck. (I don't know who you are, is what I'm saying.)

The bottom line with Jazzfanz is, you know, it's a place where pigs like to wallow. At a certain point you have to accept that you can't make it better, you can only get dirty trying.

One thing that's consistent here. The whining ******* come from all sides, so we must be doing something right here.

For the record, I'm a social leftist who was raised in California and has lived the last 20 years in Colorado.

The one specific part I'll comment on is your last sentence is such ridiculous hyperbole that either you're an absolute liar, you're sheltered to the point that you've never seen racism/homophobia of even a moderate level, or you're just trolling with it. A closet white power rally? Really? I take it you can just point out numerous examples if this were the case...unless it's so closeted that they are too scared to participate in said white power rally.

Keep on fighting the good fight. I commend you sir.

FWIW people bitch about the mods on Pacer's Digest. Shocking, I know, since apparently it's the epitome of a perfect board (or a really good one). Amazingly enough it just goes with the territory. People either complain about heavy handedness or being too lax, and typically each complaint gives more insight about the complainer than the way things are.

The moderators are doing a bang-up job and no criticism of this board is valid. There is no sexist, racist, or homophobic content here. Personal attacks are not allowed. Clap hands.

Thankfully crying is still allowed. Where would any board be without that.

If you prefer a moderating style where everyone gets fracted/banned for any little slight comment fine. I don't. The irony is that we get accused of that one all the time. I do take issue with the claim that there is all sorts of racist/sexist/homophobic content here. I believe that claim is untrue to put it mildly.

I offered a thought in support of the thread topic -- and that thought was "accept the culture here because it isn't going to change."

If you want to stick your fingers in your ears and characterize any criticism of Jazzfanz as "crying", I'm fine with that.

Edit to add: The reason why I responded to this topic is that I've already sort of experienced the disillusionment with Jazzfanz the OP is experiencing now, and I thought "you can't change it," might be good advice for him. I certainly don't believe he can -- and I'd take your response as a moderator as pretty clear evidence of that.

I'm not trying to change Jazzfanz. I know I can't. I have zero investment in this place. I don't even post here.

Criticism is fine. But this here isn't criticism, it's just crying:

Sure there is plenty of sophomoric stuff that goes by. Frankly, show me anywhere forum where that doesn't exist. If you can find it, I'd wager their sense of humor is non-existent or rigid to the point where they are control freaks and a half. The "years of borderline racist" part where you believe it is just allowed again I will call out as untrue. Granted, I wouldn't be shocked if you found something that slipped by (god knows I don't want to read every post here) but in general racist stuff that's reported gets removed and the users get fracted. The larger issue becomes when someone expresses an opinion that could have racist beliefs behind it but doesn't explicitly say something racist (like when a certain poster says something about a hopper, whatever that is). At that point my sense of individual liberty is willing to let them say it and let others form their opinion about them. In general I'm not for interpreting people's intent and editing it, as I believe it is the antithesis of the exchange of opinion.

"Offensive" and "Family Friendly" are so subjective that it's not worth arguing about, and even us mods can't agree consistently on what that is. On the aforementioned Pacer board some guy got a fact for sarcastically saying that David West was the "heart and soul" of the Pacers after he wet the bed in a game. In their mods defense, this guy was apparently a pain so perhaps he was on thin ice there. That being said, if we gave people bans for all the sarcastic stuff said about, hell damn near every player but let's just say Al Jefferson, there would be no board left. If we have to succumb to being the 2nd worst board here for allowing such open mockery, so be it, but I would never vote a fact for that. Ever. Even for someone like HH or Blusey.

But this here isn't criticism, it's just crying:

Let's keep saying the word "crying." Let's say it five or six more times. Let's say it until they put us in word jail. There were specific bits of solid constructive criticism in the section you quoted, but the truth is it doesn't matter how the criticism is delivered. There is no delivery mechanism that will make you agree with the criticisms.

You can call out a specific mistake made by the moderators there, sure. They make mistakes. Everybody does. But year in, year out, the content there is consistently smart, civil, and even funny. Their board is vastly better than this one because of the way it is moderated.

The problem with the moderators here taking the "everybody is crying so we must be doing something right" view is that it doesn't take into account the notion that some of the people doing the crying might actually have a point.

But you guys do whatever. I don't really give a shoot.

Sexism offered at no charge to us.

Every community has to decide where it's going to come down on the issue of how much it wants disadvantaged groups to feel welcome. The more we tolerate an d engage in hurtful language, even playfully, the more unwelcoming we will be to disadvantaged people.

There were bits of "solid constructive criticism" in that section? Where? The first part was declaring how this is one of the worst bball message boards ever. The second part stated that many of the previous complaints mentioned were valid. The third part either agreed with the aforementioned complaints or just made a complaint of its own about how the rules aren't reflected here due to various offensive comments going unchecked, and the fourth part was something like "oh well, it will never change so roll with it." Where exactly is this constructive criticism you mention? It was all just whining (or crying, but apparently that is somehow a sexist word). Perhaps you are implying that if the rules were more consistently enforced (at least to the standard you prefer) the place would be much better. I disagree with the assessment that there is wild inconsistency and that taking a hard line approach to everything is even the best policy.

I guess it comes to how you view society in general. Do you want your town cops to pull everyone over who goes 5 MPH over the speed limit and give them a ticket? Some people do. It's fair and that's the law. Others think that is being too harsh and would prefer discretion over a minor offense. I tend to believe in the second philosophy myself, even though both have drawbacks.

What, don't you know crying ti supposed be bad, shameful, and unmanly? It's almost like you are rejecting his attempt to shame you with sexist language!

If anything the language was more "ageist" or whatever, since I associate crying with little kids who don't possess the maturity to reason.

I'm impressed with your ability to find some sort of offense in everything though. You would have fit in well with most of my professors.

You're entitled to whatever opinion you want. Perhaps you believe it is smart, civil, and even funny to your standards. I've never looked at the board at all so I won't make any judgements. The little google search I did just showed me that they are willing to ban people for something that I don't consider worthy of anything. I'm not even knocking the policy, I just feel philosophically different in how I approach things (keeping in mind I'm just merely 1 of 3 votes in the decision making process, and many times not even a vote at all).

In general I'm comfortable with the "everybody is crying so we must be doing something right" view. Even if both sides have legitimate points. This isn't a perfect science here, as you mentioned.
