Hayward, Kirilenko, and the myth of "The Max"

What if Burks blows up this year, or (as I think) becomes our leading scorer? And what if Kanter (getting 30 plus minutes) increases his numbers to 14/9? Gortat just inked 12 million per for 5 on less than those numbers, and he's much older. In this scenario, Hayward's contract makes...

Hayward has agreed to an offer with Hornets

Technically, DL can still work a separate deal with Charlotte with the agreement not to match. Charlotte gives up assets (whatever they might be), and gets the added benefit of not paying Hayward the higher S&T salaries. But admittedly that's a very remote possibility.

Hayward, Kirilenko, and the myth of "The Max"

Freak, good to hear your voice. Yeah, I think this is coming from ownership. Even though the team will stink overpaying Hayward, they're terrified to take a "catastrophic" step back by not signing him. Anyone objective or dispassionate would realize that next year is a loss anyway...

Doh. Well, at least I don't have to change my point

Omnibus Gordon Hayward Thread (To clean up the Board some)

And FWIW, I don't see how anyone can argue this offseason isn't just a salary bubble, like the tech or housing bubbles. Teams will overspend in the arms race, but next season when the number of teams with cap space is greatly reduced, salaries will contract. So the argument for paying...

I wouldn't be talking myself into paying Burks the Max, either.

Omnibus Gordon Hayward Thread (To clean up the Board some)

Last part of the poker game is convincing Jordan you're going to match, but that if you were blown away you'd consider letting him go. Jordan's been really aggressive, he was thisclose to making the playoffs last year, and DL can use that against him.

Omnibus Gordon Hayward Thread (To clean up the Board some)

What I find fascinating is this: Hayward struggled badly while playing under the comparitively light pressure of trying to earn a bigger contract. Now he's supposed to flourish under the pressure of justifying a MAX deal? This has disaster written all over it.

Even without the alleged tradekicker, Hayward is instantly untradeable the moment he signs that deal.

Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

I completely understand your point, and I agree that the new CBA helps to protect teams from themeselves as far as albatross contracts go. But just look at Detroit. One year into the Josh Smith deal, and he's untradeable. Then Monroe played himself into a Max player. And Drummond's RFA will...

Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

What you said sounds exactly like the things fans of Arenas, Lewis, and Davis said to themselves on Day 1. I could go into a longer diatribe, but as a general rule, MAX players are worth it from the jump, not guys you hope will play their way into MAX value. The irony is Arenas, Lewis, and...

Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

Preach it GVC. Only an insecure GM worried about his job would cave to the market in drastically overpaying Hayward. The world will not end if we let him go. An S&T that recovers some of his value would be preferable, but even if we get nothing saddling up to Hayward as a MAX player will...

Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

Fair, but the Jazz can't start the new deal higher than 14.8 right? So if they flatten out the numbers (with a few raises mixed in), they'll still have a hard time getting to the number in year 5 that Gordon's new MAX deal as an FA would reach in what is projected to be a substantially higher...

Cavs offer Gordo MAX deal (maybe)

This makes little financial sense for Hayward because he's giving up a year of free agency. At the end of a 4 year MAX he's 28 and signs a second MAX deal at a much higher number in year 5. In the Jazz scenario, he's making substantially less in year 5, and he's 29 looking for his next MAX deal.

Rumor: Jazz prepared to match 'any offer' for Hayward.

I'll take a crack at this, but I defer to GVC's final ruling. Bird Free Agents can get 5 years at any negotiated salary. The "5 Year Max" thing I think you're talking about only applies to extensions. Like, Paul George was 'designated' allowing Indiana to sign him to a Max Extension before...

Rumor: Jazz prepared to match 'any offer' for Hayward.

So we either sign Hayward to Max Money or fall off the edge of the Earth? I'd rather see what the edge of the Earth looks like. I'll bet it looks a lot like Cleveland.

It will be hilarious to match and then find out Burks is the better player.

Rumor: Jazz prepared to match 'any offer' for Hayward.

Genessy already tweeted out what the deals would look like: https://twitter.com/DJJazzyJody/status/483392641451978752/photo/1 Basically: Utah Max is 5 years starting at 14.8 and running to 19.2; Other team's Max is 14.8 running to 16.9. No idea how accurate, but I'm sure it's pretty close...

Rumor: Jazz prepared to match 'any offer' for Hayward.

Gut feeling is Hayward doesn't want to come back. His agent will probably tell bidders only a MAX offer will get his signature, otherwise he won't sign any sheet and play out the season. The smart financial choice is to leverage the best deal for himself and not care if DL matches, but he...

    WOW!

Chad Ford tweeted it. Gordon @ 4, Exum @ 5. It's real. Unbelievable good luck. Thank god Orlando's GM is worried about his job.
