2012 Draft: Predraft Camps & Workouts

Can it really be that time of year again? The draft is just around the corner, and being a draft junkie and a Jazz fan I like to follow all the camp info and workouts in one place and read what ya'll like to say about things.

The first camp starts tomorrow, April 11th. The Portsmouth Invitational Tournament used to mean a lot more, but the increased number of one and dones, or guys coming out as sophomores/ Juniors has really altered what Portsmouth is about. It is for seniors, and is by invitation. But seniors that are projected to be 1st round picks don’t usually attend—Jimmer did not go. It is for guys who are projected to be 2nd rounders or go undrafted. Still NBA scouts and GMs attend. The Jazz are there every year, but like everything KOC does it is not widely publicized.

Recent participants that ended up in the NBA include: Jimmy Butler, Andrew Goudlock, Landry Fields, Anthony Morrow, Carl Landry, Gary Neal, CJ Watson, Steve Novak, Chuck Hayes, Jeremy Lin, DeMarre Carroll, and Wes Mathews. Other former Jazzmen Marcus Cousins, Andre Owens, Ronnie Price, Ronald Dupree, Keith McLeod and Sundiata Gaines also played there. Ironically, second round pick -Jeremy, the Human Pogo Stick, Evans was not even invited.

Here is the Roster: https://www.portsmouthinvitational.com/players.php

I don’t know much about NCaa but some of the names I recognized like Yancy Gates, Gilchrist, a couple of Jones kids, and a Robinson guy are going to be there.

It is not the Gilchrist from KY I can tell you that even without looking at the roster.

Today is the NCAA early entry withdrawl deadline. Underclassmen have until 11:59 p.m. ET on April 29 to declare for the 2012 NBA Draft. Under NCAA guidelines, players who have not previously declared and who have not hired an agent must withdraw from draft consideration by April 10 to retain their college eligibility. The NBA's deadline is 5 p.m. ET on June 18.

And no, The Gilchrist kid is not THAT Gilchrist. Nor are the Jones those two Jones, and the Robinson is some dude you have probably never heard of. Portsmouth is for sleepers, not stars.

Again without looking at the roster believe he is from Maryland.

Ohhhh .. actually MKG is from NJ. I thought you were referring to something else, completely. (UK guys won't be working out for teams / camps, etc .. or at least most won't be)

A few players I will keep my eyes on

Jordan Taylor- has great size would make a good back up pg
Henry sims- good size for a center and who doesn't like georgetown centers
Alex young- some say could be a steal in the second
Dee bost- just for cy

How's this Chase Stanback? He's listed as a guard but is 6'8" and can shoot the 3. A 3 who can hit the 3 would be nice. Usually UNLV guys are athletic too.

Rosen intrigues me a little but that's probably just some Linsanity lingering.

Kim English's numbers are also very solid but with Burks and Hayward, I'm not sure we need a guy who's 6'6".

Chase was a transfer from UCLA. He can really stroke it. He is somewhat athletic, but not going to blow you away. If we ended up with him as our shooter off the bench I would not be mad at all.

Think he can play the 3? How is he defensively? Howland is huge on defense so if he recruited him, I'd think the kid may have some ability there.

I always thought he seemed like more of a two, but his handles aren't the best. He has the size to play the three though so I can't see why he can't fill a role off the bench. His d is acceptable, but again not a game changer there. He is a player that could give you 10 minutes a game and drill threes all day. He is a pure shooter which is what I would like to see us target with that second rounder.

Id love to draft a player that Chris Singleton was supposed to be. An SF that can defend multiple positions, but still hit the three at a good rate. Either that, or Harrison Barnes. I don't know if having Burks makes a player like Austin Rivers redundant (I know I know, BPA).

Karma will bite the Warriors in their backside as one of the seven teams behind them in the lottery will jump over them so Golden State moves to number eight and we get the pick.

The Chicago pre draft camp at ATTACK athletics is tenativley scheduled for June 6, 7, & 8. This is the camp that everyone attends. The players get officially measured for size, speed, agility etc.

The list of players has yet to be announced.
