A thought on the salary cap increase.

We all know that the increase in the salary cap means that the wages of virtually all NBA players will go up. That means the Jazz, and other teams, will have to pay more not only to keep their core players, but also to fill up the rest of their squad.

Which brings us to another side effect of the cap increase that I haven't seen discussed; the larger gap between NBA and international leagues salaries. Since the cap does not affect leagues outside of the NBA, it will become more cost effective to sign international players to acquire role players and bench fillers.

I predict an influx of international players signings over the next few years, and I think the Jazz should aggressively look at that market as to pick the lowest hanging fruit before they're picked by other teams. That way, more money will be freed up to sign core players as opposed to what would be available if we stick to signing NBA FAs.

I'd be interested in hearing thoughts on the matter, in addition to discussion of players the organization should take a look at.

The Jazz have numerous 2nd rounders over the next 3 seasons that they can use to draft and stash foreign players.

I predict the NBA will still treat foreign players and contracts as it always has. What it is w foreign Europeans begging for there players to be NBA?

I would predict higher usage of D-League contracts rather than an out of the ordinary increase in foreign players.

Pretty much spot on Siro. of course it boils down to dollars...

They're positioned to avoid being in this boat for several years though.. I'd say til the 2020's if they maneuver the cap correctly.

I've gotta say it isn't that bold of a call though, I'd call it something inevitable.. I've been speaking on population theory's effect on the future influx of talent from across the globe, for years here..

The Canadian invasion got plenty of coverage with the back-to-back #1 overall picks..

The Jazz have numerous 2nd rounders over the next 3 seasons that they can use to draft and stash foreign players.

This is the best way to cost-control the issue..

The further the salaries separate from the NBA to the international leagues, there will be more urgency to try to get to the NBA by some of the top players but they can still just wait til the rookie deal runs out and re-negotiate

To be honest i wish nba teams were forced into using like 5 to 10 mil of the increase on their dleague teams. Expand the draft to 4 rounds and make the dleague a true minor league system.

It would mean a lot to players if tbey knrw they could make 250k to 500k to play in the league. Knowing they could work their way into the nba.

Fix the draft system either join the league out of high school to play in the dleague or go to college for 3 years.

For those of you wondering why the jazz are stockpiling up second round draft picks, there was an article that came out about a year ago that spoke to this point exactly.

Paraphrased version: NBA cap to rise. Cost of bench players and role players will be higher making rookie contracts significantly more valuable. Second round draft picks are a cheap way to stock pile up these 'budget filler contracts'. DLs insight is excellent IMHO.
