So just revisiting the argument over how much better the Jazz would be with a shot-blocking presence...

Well, maybe AJ isn't exactly dominant, but I find it surprising the Jazz are the 4TH BEST in terms of blocks per game at 5.8/per, behind New York, Washington and Chicago. Then you have Charlotte, Indiana and Minnesota. Now, I'm not a statistician, but I have a tough time seeing any correlation at all between number of wins and blocks there. Extend it down to top-10 and you then have OKC, Miami and Memphis. Combined winning percentage of the Top-10 is .507.

What seems to be more telling is defensive rebounding, and the Jazz are turrible (4th worst).

Top-10 teams in terms of defensive rebounds: Miami, Indiana, Orlando, Chicago, San Antonio, OKC, Dallas, Philadelphia, Lakers, Denver. Combined winning percentage: .640!!!

i'm amazed that blocking one or two more shots during a game (in which nearly 100 will be attempted) doesn't make a huge difference in the outcome. sure, maybe half or more of those blocks will end up right back in the hands of the other team anyway. and only half of all attempted shots even go in the basket. but, come on! it's gotta make a huge difference... right?

The answer to both questions is yes. This is why Birdman will lead Denver to the championship this year. Book it!

Ahh, I miss the good ol' days of what's-his-name arguing that rebounds = defense in the midst of all the pining for a 'shot-blocking center' that was, apparently, the key to Jazz fortunes. He took a lot of ridicule from the shot-blocking center enthusiasts, but I always thought he made a valid point, even if he took it a bit too far perhaps.

It's more than shot-blocking, it's having a defensive presence. Jefferson gives us shot blocking, but I don't see him giving us much of a 'defensive presence' in the middle.

I'm not sure what the answer is but I'd gladly exchange at this point some shot blocks for some more defensive rebounding. Our lack of rebounding is KILLING us. I'm guessing, with nothing but casual observation to back it up, that inability to corral the defensive rebound has cost this team a number of games this year.

If we are not improving the outside shooting and scoring from the wing position, we should consider enhancing our defensive rebounding by acquiring some solid center. I think Dalembert can be had for the right price.
