I really think this is nuts. I just don't understand how you can make millions off college sports on the one hand and take away a person's ability to make money off their own signature on the other. But this isn't even really about the players making money, is it? I'm confused.
I get the whole romantic notion regarding student athletes, but I think it just isn't based in the real world. It's about some ideal fantasy that doesn't exist.
So ban players from playing professionally. Ban colleges from bribing kids into going to their school. After that, I don't understand how it's even legal to take the college athletes value away from them and give it to college athletic departments to profit from instead.
I think college athletes should be able to do endorsements. (but I think it's also okay for the college to have uniform rules that prohibit players from wearing items during games for the purpose of endorsement)
I think college athletes should be able to sell memorabilia with their signature on it.
I think college athletes should own their own image.
I think it's downright wrong to prohibit college athletes from capitalizing on their own skill and image to make money when there is no guarantee that they will be able to make money later on at the professional level... especially when money is being made off their skill and their image already, it just isn't going to them. Sounds like a pretty sweet scam.
I don't really know the ins and outs of college sports but this has always baffled me and it just seems wrong.
The question is simple, but the answer is anything but. Will college football teams stop allowing players to sign autographs?
