Do we have enough young players?

I think there comes a point that assets have to be used, instead of drafting young players every year. I feel like the Jazz already have enough young talent that they need to develop already. There's Exum, Hood, Trey, Burks, Kanter, Gobert, etc. Hayward and Favors look like they are progressing well and have been turned into starting material now. So the question is: Do we need to keep drafting talent and young guys with potential? Or are we to the point were we need to cash in and bring in some established talent to bolster the guys we already have?

I think if we don't get a top 10 draft pick in this next draft we should look to trade it, with some other pieces to start building an even better team. Now this can be tricky because some owners can pull the trigger too soon and end up being stuck in mediocrity, look at the pelicans for example. They still have potential, but I feel like they rushed their rebuild.

Would it be rushing or skipping steps for the Jazz to look for some established talent? Do we want to after this season? Would adding more rookies and young guys end up taking too long?

This team obviously needs a PG that can really benefit all of our players. Exum won't be ready till about year 3 to take over the starting spot effectively imo. We could always use a great shooter at the 2 guard spot. It looks like we have a great future front lineup with Hayward, Favors, and Gobert.

The answer to your question, IMO, is Yes and No. A lot comes down to timing and fit. For example, I do think we could use an established guard, but not at too great a cost; that said, theoretically, you always want young assets flowing in.... what could be wrong with that?

Kind of a lazy response. I'm out.

Yes and no.

Yes, in that they could use a good vet or two by next season. Definitely could see Utah burning some assets for a significant guard in the offseason, maybe even by the deadline if the right deal comes along.

No, in that you never stop building for the future. Bringing in fresh talent on a consistent basis is the way to maintain a good team. Just the same, Utah is in a position where they should definitely consider packaging a player with a pick to upgrade our guard position/s.

Edit: Got Naos in my brain, apparently.:o

I definitely agree that you need potential young talent coming in at various times. Just look at the Knicks and Nets, they look to be screwed because they have traded a lot of their picks in a win now thought process.

I feel like it's getting close to when DL should pull the trigger on a few things.

I'm with those guys.

The problem with the trade for a vet is you have to wait for the right opportunity... We shouldn't force it. I also feel like favs and Gordon are vets now. Wouldn't mind a second tier get pg to help Exum. I think Patrick Beverly is a free agent and might be pryed away for an okay price... Someone like that.

Like freak and Naos, my answer is Yes and No.

You always want to have young talent ready to move up into backup or starter roles. There will always be roster churn. Some players will leave because they want to, others may price themselves out of what a team can afford. And there are ALWAYS injuries. Even though the Jazz have 10-11 players who could be in the rotation next season, there are several in the draft who could develop into eventual contributors.

There's no guarantee Hayward or Favors re-sign once they become UFA's. And even shorter-term, Kanter could receive an offer the Jazz don't want to match or Booker could leave in 2 years (or want too much to stay). There's no reason drafting BPA wouldn't be a great thing to do. The draft looks like it will be pretty talented through the entire lottery.

The key factor, IMO, is to take a look at the rotation players and see where you can make upgrades. Sometimes it may be via the draft. Other times, perhaps another team is willing to part with a veteran. If I were DL, I'd certainly entertain offers for a package deal which includes the #8 pick and some other assets (like Trey, Rodney and/or another future pick or an expiring contract). But I'd only do so if the trade returned a starting quality player. Jazz need quality, not more depth.

As for a "veteran," Utah has their exceptions. If a veteran is needed, Jazz could also use the MLE.
