Steeping aside from UGLI's home-wrecking and back to topic.
I think 4 super conferences of 20 teams will happen. Essentially it would be the same as 8, ten team conferences. Each conference has already expanded to the point that contraction will not happen. So, the 20 team plan will end up making the most sense. The problem with 4, 16 team leagues is that their are more than 64 schools that should and will be included in the playoffs. 80 gets the competitive schools. If you don't think this is the real number, then list the schools that should be in the FBS and see how many you come up with - it will be a lot more than 64 teams and it will be hard to decide who the last few should be to make 80.
Each league will have divisions and the champion of each division will play for the League championship. The four winners of the league championships will then make up the 4 team playoff system. Teams continue to play close to their geographic areas and travel cost will be reduced for all the teams, especially the minor sports programs. This will have no affect on Basketball - a good thing. The true FBS teams will have a place to play. If you're not in a conference you better get in the right one and soon. I see it coming down to leagues made up primarily from teams in the Pac 10/ Big 12; Big Ten/ACC; ACC/Big East and the SEC/ACC. Everybody else will be left out in the cold. Notre Dame will have to join somewhere or they will be out! I think the four surviving conference after all is done will be the Pacific Coast, Big Ten, ACC and SEC. The Mountain West, Big 12, and Big East conference will no longer exist as they are the weakest and youngest.
It will be easy to pick 16 for each league, the last 4 in each league will be the hardest to align because of geography, traditional rivalry's, and in state schools. The beauty of this system, is you could play Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Ohio State as the 3 out of conference games, lose them all and still win the national championship. Inter league games and rivalries will be still be great games. This is why it will happen. Too many empty seats when a nobody is played. Now, all the games will be "big games", fill the stadiums and make everyone more money. This would make football more like the NCAA basketball tourney. You may hate to hear this but the winner of the National football championship could have a final record of 10-5 - not likely, but it could happen. But that would be no different than a 27 -12 NCAA basketball champion. You reward a team for getting better and don't eliminate a team for a couple of early season losses. EVERYONE will be in contention until at least the 5th or 6th game of the season for the conference and national championships!
Everyone thinks it's two big, but it really makes perfect sense for the FBS schools.
