From Turd to COY?

Punch Bowl Re-Filler
Gotta believe Corbin is the leader out of the gate for COY. I wonder what kind of record he will need to get that honor?
Of course, winning COY is generally a curse. A lot of coaches are in the unemployment line just a few years after winning.

If the team continues to play like this you have to believe he has a legitimate chance to win the COY. The Jazz were expected to be at the bottom of the NBA by the "experts". So if this play, and the wins, continue I think he will.

It should be said that Doug Collins is coaching the sixers to a surprising season also. could come down to those 2.

But yes, the award is a joke. Dell Harris won it in the 90's, even and he now coaches Greg Ostertag in the D-league

Can you imagine the irony if Ty wins after Sloan didn't in 24 years.
Irony, yes. But COY is generally about exceeding expectations (or at least meeting very high ones). Sloan's teams always disappointed (i.e. no championships) so there was always some residual bias from year-to-year. Only legitimate shot he had was after Stockton/Malone retired. It really was a toss-up between Jerry and Hubie Brown, who did a helluva job with the Grizzlies that season. And craig is right, I failed to include Collins. Sixers are certainly exceeding expectations thus far. Throw in Thibodeau as well.

There are some interesting parallels between Brown's Grizzlies and Corbin's Jazz: both teams were/are extremely deep, but not blessed with all-stars at multiple positions. Memphis had a very good big in Gasol (still young, though) and some other decent players like Posey, Bonzi Wells and Mike Miller, but nothing too scary, But they killed you with effort and a deep bench. And one of the leaders on that bench was Earl Watson. Memphis finished 50-32. Then they decided depth was great, but was never going to win a championship and it was just too expensive to maintain, so they traded players or let them leave as FA's. Brown also left for health reasons a few games into '04-05.

I know its early but so far I like corbin better than sloan. From subs to defensive philosophy. Jerry drove me nuts with his lack of adjustments

He's got a shot at it, that's for sure.

You can see why Corbin has been in such demand around the league. Maybe the leagues GMs know something about basketball and coaching after all.
