Frontrunner.........

Any of you guys use it? It's coming to Provo in 2 months. I was just thinking after cruising the main Utah Jazz forum that I would never in my life drive to SLC for a scrimmage right now, but once that baby is firing up there and back, I'm thinking I'll probably be hitting at least an extra 5 or 6 Jazz games now that I don't have the excuse that I feel too tired to want to deal with fighting traffic to get up there after a long day. I've never really been excited about public transportation, but I am kind of anticipating it now with the shuttling to Jazz games angle.

If any of you use it currently, is the Ogden/SLC route usually packed out on Jazz game days?

My wife takes Frontrunner to work every day and loves it. I've taken it to games and it's great going to the game but sucks going home because it usually leaves the station around the time I would be getting home if I drove. Riding it on a stormy winter night is the exception. As for how crowded it is, it's hit and miss. In the winter, it's crowded with people going to the game, shopping, and seeing the lights. In the spring, not so much.

You live in Provo? I'm sorry.

Seriously though, I use it twice a week. It's nice but doesn't run often enough. Like YB said, at night it's once an hour and even 80+ minutes between the 957PM and the last one at 1117PM or whatever going north. TNT/ESPN games don't usually get out before 1117 and you're still miles away. Anyway, that's my biggest gripe - the frequency. Maybe with Happy Valley being added, it will run more often or something. Maybe less often.

Yeah, the price seemed kind of high, if you were commuting everyday it might be worth it but just for a day trip it certainly isn't.

I ride daily. The wireless sucks and blacks out at every station. It's slow and the transfers suck, but it beats traffic and kicking the dogs, cats, & neighbor kids when I get home.

So I finally took a ride on the Frontrunner....because with the new Trax to Airport route I thought it might be interesting to see how easily I could connect then and what type of time I could make. Because not having to park at the Airport is always nice. It was a lot slower than I expected. I guess I never paid attention to how fast the thing scooted or not in all the news write ups, but I really doubt it gets to SLC much faster than being on a bus that never stops when it gets on I-15. Certainly a better experience though.

My only question is, why is it so slow? I wasn't expecting an Asian bullet train or anything, but damn, we were probably only going 50 and the stops are a lot more drawn out than expected. It was like riding the Heber Creeper. And it's more expensive than I thought it would be(still a good price to get to the Airport, but kind of rip off if you are just hanging in SLC for the day or whatever). Meh. Meh. Meh.

Because we couldn't secure a right of way for two tracks. One has to either creep into station, where the switches are, or speed in and wait a while for the opposite direction train. That and they have a **** ton of stops in the revenue base, where trax already has been operating forever.

Plus, the d heads decided to make the transfer a full 15 minutes at N. Temple to assure the little old ladies had the full time to drag their bags up the escalator instead of making the first departure 2-3 minutes, then those already waiting 15 minutes would have had to wait a numbing 17-18. Yeah, I'm kinda pissed at the UTA dip****s.

How much does it cost?

Pay per stop. I'm $5.25 to SL Central, another .50 to N. Temple I think. Plus, if you're going to the airport then you don't get transfers included since it's not round trip. Add another $2.75 or something. THIS IS THE MOST EXPENSIVE AND MOST POLLUTING FORM OF TRANSPORTATION POSSIBLE. An old coal fired steam car would be more efficient.
