I'm thinking about next year and how good we could be.
Personally I want is to trade in for another all star level player. I think Paul George is the most likely to be traded and for a reasonable deal since most think he will go to LA. It would be a big risk but that's would make is a really good team. I would obviously look into any good player that we might be able to get. Butler, DeRozan or anyone else would be nice but unlikely.
If we don't make a significant move what is our best case? I'm thinking pretty damn good.
What if Hill was playing at his pre injury level in the playoffs? We would have been a lot better. Not enough to get past GS.
What if Exum plays like he did in game 4 second quarter more and more consistently next year? I think that's likely. He will learn body control more and add strength which will help. The biggest thing I want to see is him shooting consistent from 3. His post all star shooting was decent, what if he can get to .400. With his defense bothering Pgs he could dominate off the bench or even start if this happens. Maybe bother Steph Curry more than anyone else in the league does.
What if Favors recovers from his injury and adds a consistent 3 point shot? Imagine Favors from last season before his injury when he was really close to an all star and arguable was our best player to start that season before getting hurt. If we got that player back with a 3 point shot we would be really good. That would lead to the best defense in the NBA and we would get a post player we could dump it down to and punish small ball teams and help when the offense stalls.
What if Hood becomes consistent and stays healthy. If he shoots well against GS I think we win a couple games this year. We need him to be consistent. His defense improved this year but almost everything else went down.
Imagine a healthy Burks against GS. Attacking the basket is their weakness. Remember when he was leading the league in under 2 minute situations for awhile. We could have used that off the bench.
When Hayward stays how much will he improve again. Even just the jump he made in the playoffs will be huge going forward.
What if Lyle's finds his shot again? Hopefully he can grow up, refocus and improve. I haven't given up on him. A sharp shooting 3 that can handle the ball would make our bench or starting unit excel.
What could a fully healthy Gobert do in the playoffs? We have yet to see. How much more does he improve this off season? He will improve it's just a matter of how much. He improved almost every game this season for awhile. Can he become a Star level to 10 player on this league? It's certainly possible.
Mostly just imagine our team not having to start Mack, Diaw and Ingles in the playoffs. A 100% healthy Favors Hill and Hood pushing those guys to the bench and an improved Exum, Lyle's, Burks and whoever else pushing some of those guys out of rotation or limiting their minutes and roles.
Not all this will happen. But if some of it does I think we have the potential to be a top 3 seed next season. We also could push GS next year if a lot of this happens.
I still prefer to make a big move but I am not upset if we bring back this team mostly the same and expect it to improve because it can and will. Although a few tweaks will happen no matter what.
