If Dallas keeps pick they are expected to draft Shroeder.

According to this Dallas reporter:

That probably pushes either MCW or McCollum to the Jazz.

Everybody knows the Mavericks won’t have their draft pick, the 13th overall in the first round, on next season’s roster. This is in keeping with the franchise’s philosophy of trying to win big immediately.

What remains a mystery is what they will do with their pick in Thursday’s NBA draft. While the smart money is on a trade, the possibility of taking an international player and stashing him overseas exists.

If you’re looking for a legitimate name, remember Germany’s Dennis Schroeder for three reasons.

First, he’s young. He won’t turn 20 until Sept. 15.

Second, he’s a point guard, and he’s 6-2.

Third, can you imagine the connection Dirk Nowitzki would make serving as mentor to a fellow German who could be a key cog for the future of the Mavericks?

The Mavericks are fixated on making a run at Dwight Howard in free agency, according to all signs. Doing so will require them to make sure the 13th pick is either in somebody else’s possession by July 1 or pick a player who is under contract to play overseas next season. Schroeder qualifies in that regard. He’s due to play in Braunschweig next season.

But a question that has yet to be answered is why the Mavericks would be unwilling to draft a player at 13 and allow Nowitzki to enter into his inevitable new role of being mentor to the new generation of Mavericks.

Let’s face it. His time as a champion was 2011. The likelihood of it happening again is so remote that it’s barely worth addressing, no matter who comes to the franchise in the coming free-agent frenzy.

Nobody can blame the Mavericks for trying to give Nowitzki a graceful finish to his career, one with a legitimate playoff team that can dream big, even if it doesn’t have the horses to be included in the big race.

Making one more stab at greatness before Nowitzki retires is admirable. But even if the Mavericks do put together a championship-caliber team, it will be with Nowitzki as a complementary piece, not a star.

At what point do the Mavericks start using the draft to restock their roster? It hasn’t happened in years, although last season’s second-round finds in Jae Crowder and Bernard James provided a much-needed infusion of youth.

But if the Mavericks trust their scouting system, there’s no reason why the 13th pick can’t be used — and kept.

That's fine.

Take 150 lbs German Steve Nash.

Typical of a Mark Cuban pick. He'll then proceed in 3 years to spend $100 million for a vet PG as German Steve Nash rides the bench to oblivion.

While we'll be laughing ourselves all the way to the playoffs with a superior talent at PG/SG

This looks like pure speculation from a Dallas beat writer. Not sure how you got to "they are expected to draft Shroeder" from this.

This is just some guys opinion with no inside sources backing it up. A lot of iffs, ands, and maybes which mean VERY little.

Even if Schroeder is gone, there will be someone delicious for us there. That will only push down someone else we want.

Yea, but there was a Dallas writer a couple of days ago that said there was only like 5% chance that the Mavs keep their pick.

I still cannot imagine Shabazz drops past OKC or Dallas. I sure don't want MCW, though.
